The main map on gaiagps.com now features a new interface. The redesigned layout makes it easier to view map data, manage layers, and access planning tools directly from the web. This article walks through the main map features and explains how to navigate and use the updated layout.
Main Map Overview
Below is a labeled screenshot of the map interface. Each number corresponds to a UI element described in detail in the sections that follow.
Main Map Features
1. Search Bar
- Type the name of a trail, park, peak, or any other point of interest (POI) to search for it. You can also search using coordinates.
2. Overlays
- This is where you control the visibility of your saved data at a high level.
- Show or hide all of your tracks, waypoints, routes, etc., or add coordinate grids.
- This is also where you enable the Public Tracks Layer.
3. Layers
- This is where you change your visible map layers.
4. Discover
- Discover and view nearby hikes in a specific area on the map
5. Saved
- This is where you view your saved tracks, waypoints, etc., in the sidebar.
6. Go Mobile
- If you don't have the app downloaded, this icon will appear in the sidebar. Download the Gaia GPS app to your smartphone for free to navigate saved routes, record your progress, and mark things you find along the way.
7. Learn
- Click to visit the Gaia GPS Blog.
8. Help
- Click to visit the Gaia GPS Help Center.
9. Settings
- This is where you can set the map preferences to change displayed units and coordinate formats.
10. Profile & Notifications
- Click your user profile icon to open a dropdown menu. This menu includes:
- Data summary pages for each type of Saved Item (e.g., tracks, waypoints, etc)
- Your Team page, if you have one
- Your Profile page
- Your Subscriptions page
- Your Account Settings page

- Click the bell to view your notifications.
11. Create Waypoint
- Click this button to place a waypoint on the map.
12. Create Route
- Click this button to start creating a route.
13. Create Area
- Click this button to create an area or polygon.
14. Import Data
- Click this button to start importing GPX, KML, KMZ, GeoJSON, or FIT Files.
- (Pro tip: You can also import a file by dragging it onto the map.)
15. Print Map
- Click here to print your map. (Available with a Premium Membership.)

- View the Map Legend for your active map sources
18. Find My Location
- Center the map on your current location.
19. Zoom In/Out
- (+) and (-) symbols zoom in and out from the center of the map.
Marked Location
Click anywhere on the map, and the sidebar will open with information about that location, as well as actions to take with that location. Below is a labeled screenshot of the map and the marked location interface. Each number corresponds to a UI element described in detail in the sections that follow.
1. Click any point on the map.
2. The sidebar will open and show the Elevation and Coordinates at that location. Click the clipboard icon next to the coordinates to copy the coordinates to your clipboard.
3. Take one of several actions on that location. Click the three vertical dots menu for more options.
- Save a waypoint
- Create a route
- Share that location: clicking Share copies the URL to your clipboard
- Get driving directions: clicking Directions opens that location in Google Maps
4. View nearby Hikes: Click any Hike for more information and to highlight it on the map.
