This article will help you manage the total download limit for Mapbox layers.
Mapbox layers like Satellite, Satellite with Labels, and Satellite Topo have a total tile limit of 160,000 per device. Tiles are the individual images that make up a digital map.
Once you reach 160,000 Mapbox tiles, any new map downloads with Mapbox layers will not work.
There are 2 options to work around this limit:
1. Use a different layer
Layers such as World Imagery or USDA Aerial do not have a total download limit.
You can add these sources with these steps:
- Add, Layer, and Change Map Sources in the iOS app
- Add, Layer, and Change Map Sources in the Android app
You'll find them in the Satellite Imagery section of the Layers menu.
2. Archive Maps
You can archive map downloads to get under the limit. Archiving will remove the downloaded maps from your device but will save them to your web account if you want to restore them later.
The easiest way to archive a map is to just delete the downloaded map from the Saved menu in the mobile app. This will archive the map on the website.
You can also archive the map directly from the website and then sync the changes to the mobile app:
After archiving the downloaded maps, you may need to resume the download if it doesn't resume automatically:
How many maps do I need to archive?
To figure out which downloaded maps to archive, open the Saved menu and then tap on a map name. The details page will display the number of tiles for that downloaded map.
