This article will explain the difference between the Gaia GPS Profile on Gaiagps.com and the Outside profile, which can be accessed via Gaiagps.com and the iOS and Android apps. The Gaia GPS profile is an older version of a profile belonging to Gaia GPS alone and is only accessible via Gaiagps.com. The Outside profile is meant to be a global profile across Outsideonline.com, Gaia GPS, and Trailforks.
Outside Profile (on Web, iOS, and Android)
Your Outside profile and Outside username will differ from your Gaia GPS profile on web. The Gaia GPS profile is an older version of a profile (including picture, description, and location) and will NOT populate over to your Outside profile. Any edits that you make to your Gaia GPS profile will not show across platforms.
The Outside profile is meant to be a global profile across outsideonline.com, Gaia GPS, and Trailforks. Certain edits that you make to your Outside profile should populate across platforms and will be reflected as your profile in the feed.
To view your Outside profile, related to the activity feed, please visit the 'Edit Outside Profile' button under in My Profile.
From there, you can edit the profile that will appear in the activity feed. The privacy settings for your Outside profile and the content that appears in the feed will DIFFER from the Profile Stats Settings outlined above for the Gaia GPS Profile settings on web.
The username shown on your Outside profile is different than the username that shows on the Gaia GPS profile. If you have a Trailforks account, the username on your Outside profile will match the username on your Trailforks account.
You will be able to change your Outside profile privacy settings via the Gaia GPS app, the Trailforks app, or via Outsideonline.com.
Note: There may be a delay in syncing information across platforms. If you do not see your photo, username, or privacy settings syncing across platforms, you may have to update each platform individually. Importantly, please ensure that you have your privacy settings on each platform set to your preferred visibility and privacy.
The Outside profile and activity feed privacy settings will apply to recorded Gaia GPS tracks. If you do NOT wish to share your recorded tracks to the feed, please ensure that your profile is set to PRIVATE, and your activity feed settings are set to 'Only You.'
For more information on publishing tracks and posting to the feed, please see this article.
Gaia GPS Profile (on Web)
To access your Gaia GPS Profile, log in to your gaiagps.com account, click the drop-down menu in the top right, and select My Profile:
Your Gaia GPS profile is separate from your Outside profile, and the display name, username, location, and biography do not populate over to your Outside profile. The username you see under My Profile on gaiagps.com will reflect either your display name on Gaia GPS or the prefix to your email address on Gaia GPS.
You can make changes to your Gaia GPS profile display and what is public/private on the website. There are 2 profiles available that can be visible to others.
- Public Profile: Your public profile is linked around the website and app when you post publicly or make your tracks/routes public. For example, if you make your track public and it appears on the Public Tracks overlay, another user can click on your name and view your public profile.
- Shareable Profile: Your Shareable Profile is only visible to those who have a direct link to it. You can create a link to your shareable profile on the profile page by clicking one of the share options on the ‘Stats’ or ‘Recent Activity’ tab.
You are able to change what is visible on each profile. Some information will remain public including your username, bio, and profile picture. Your Gaia GPS Profile on web will differ from your Outside profile.
By default, each profile view contains:
- Public Profile: Only your public tracks on the Recent Activity tab.
- Shareable Profile: Your public tracks on the Recent Activity tab and your stats on the Stats tab.
Gaia GPS Profile: Show My Stats Settings
To control if the stats tab is displayed on your public or shareable profile:
- Go to https://www.gaiagps.com/settings/
- In the profile section, you can select:
- To Friends On My Shared Profile. This is the default setting. Your stats tab will only be visible to others that have your Shareable Profile link.
- To Everyone On My Public and Shared Profile. The stats tab will be visible on both your public and sharable profile.
- To Only Me - Hide on Both Profiles. The stats tab will be hidden on your public and shareable profile.
To change what content is on your Recent Activity tab:
- Only public tracks are displayed on your Public or Shareable Profile. Follow these steps to make your tracks public or private: Make your Tracks, Routes, Waypoints, and Folders Public/Private from gaiagps.com
When you are viewing your profile page, all tabs will be visible and both public and private tracks will be visible on the Recent Activity tab.
