This article will explain the difference between your Gaia GPS username on gaiagps.com and your Outside username on the Outside profile, which can be accessed via gaiagps.com and the iOS and Android apps. The Gaia GPS profile is an older version of a profile belonging to Gaia GPS alone and is only accessible via gaiagps.com. The Outside profile is meant to be a shared global profile across outsideonline.com, Gaia GPS, and Trailforks.
I'm seeing a username I've never seen before on my Home feed!
You may be seeing a randomly generated username associated with your Gaia GPS tracks published to the feed. We randomly generated an Outside username for you if you previously did not have a username through Trailforks. If you wish to change the username that will appear in the home feed, please visit the 'Edit Outside Profile' button under in My Profile. From there, you can edit the Outside profile that will appear in the activity feed, including editing your Outside username.
Changing your Outside username may not retroactively change the username that your previous tracks were published under.
Note: changing your username in gaiagps.com under your Gaia GPS Profile will not change your Outside username. You must change your username in the Outside profile directly.
Outside Username (on Web, iOS, and Android)
Your Outside username differs from your Gaia GPS username on web. The Gaia GPS username belongs to the Gaia GPS profile that you find on gaiagps.com. The Gaia GPS profile includes a picture, bio, username, and location; this information will NOT populate over to your Outside profile. Any edits that you make to your Gaia GPS profile will not show across platforms.
To view your Outside profile, related to the activity feed, please visit the 'Edit Outside Profile' button under in My Profile. From there, you can edit the Outside profile that will appear in the activity feed, including editing your Outside username.
The username shown on your Outside profile is different than the username that shows on the Gaia GPS profile.
A. If you have a Trailforks account under the same email address as your Gaia GPS and Outside account, the username on your Outside profile will match the username on your Trailforks account. When you create a Gaia GPS account, you also create an Outside account. Your credentials for Gaia GPS and Outside are the same.
B. In order to protect your privacy, if you previously did not have a username through Trailforks, we have randomly generated a username for your Outside profile. You can go to My Profile -> Edit Profile -> Change Username to change your username to a preferred username. You can change your username to match the username on your Gaia GPS profile.
C. If you did not have a username through either Trailforks or Outside, we have randomly generated a username for your Outside profile. You can go to My Profile -> Edit Profile -> Change Username to change your username to a preferred username. You can change your username to match the username on your Gaia GPS profile.
Important! If you change your username in your Gaia GPS profile, this will NOT change your username in your Outside profile. You will have to manage these separately.
The Outside profile and activity feed privacy settings will apply to recorded Gaia GPS tracks. Your Outside username will appear for any tracks that are shared to the activity feed.
For more information on publishing tracks and posting to the feed, please see this article.
Gaia GPS Username (on Web)
To access your Gaia GPS Profile, log in to your gaiagps.com account, click the drop-down menu in the top right, and select My Profile:
Your Gaia GPS username is separate from your Outside username; the display name, username, location, and biography found in the Gaia GPS profile do not populate over to your Outside profile.
The username you see under My Profile on gaiagps.com will reflect either your display name on Gaia GPS or the prefix to your email address on Gaia GPS. You can edit this username to one of your choosing.
