What are the new icons showing up on the Gaia GPS Overlanding layer?
Gaia GPS is partnering with Toyota to feature Toyota-sponsored overlanding and multi-use trails on the Overlanding map layer. This feature will include detailed trail information, integration with Trail Karma for donations, and a free access period to the Gaia GPS Overlanding map for all users during the 3-month partnership. After this partnership concludes, the Overlanding layer will return to a subscription-only feature.
The icons you see on the Gaia GPS overlanding map layer are part of this campaign with Toyota; by tapping/clicking on the icon, you can view highlights of that specific overlanding trail, with photos, details about the trail, and a link to donate to the corresponding trail organization. Toyota will be matching donations made to trails (up to $80K).
Where can I view the highlighted overlanding trails?
Trail Karma on Gaia GPS, highlighting 20 overlanding trails, will be available on the Gaia GPS Overlanding (feet) and Gaia GPS Overlanding (meters) map layers. These layers are typically included with our Gaia GPS Premium membership, but for the duration of the 3-month campaign, the overlanding layers will be available to all of our users, free and paid.
The updated overlanding layer is available on web, Android, and iOS devices. You must have the most recent version of the app to interact with the feature:
- Android 2025.1
- iOS 2025.2
You may see the icon on the Gaia Overland map layer itself. If the icons are not loading trails on the map itself, you may need to update your app to the most recent version.
Why are the highlighted trails not loading for me?
A. You must have the most recent version of the app in order to interact with the icons:
- Android 2025.1
- iOS 2025.2
If you have an older version of the app, you may still be able to view the version of the Overlanding map with the icons; however, you won’t be able to tap on the icons interactively. In order to interact with the new overlanding map, you will need to update your app to see all the details behind the Trail Karma & Toyota partnership.
B. Please also ensure that you do not have any pending Gaia GPS Overlanding updates:
- Tap the Saved tab to see if you have pending updates.
- Accept the updates by tapping the checkmark.
- If you have downloaded maps, the update can take several minutes.
- Once the update completes, force close and reopen the app
C. If you are still unable to view the layer, please try the following steps:
How can I add a highlighted trail to my Gaia GPS account?
In order to add a highlighted trail to your account, you can choose to create a route by following the route of the trail. You can also get directions to the trailhead by going to ‘Driving Directions,’ which will open up directions via Google/Apple maps.
Why can I see the highlighted trails on the Gaia GPS Overlanding layer, but I can’t see the icons?
The icons may be rendered not visible by having multiple layers toggled on. If you have another layer toggled on, along with the Gaia GPS Overlanding layer, you will still be able to see the highlighted trails, but the icons are obfuscated. In order to see the full overlanding layer with the icons, please remove other layers that may be left toggled on.
What is the donation process?
If you’d like to make a donation to the trail organization highlighted in the campaign, you can click on the red ‘Donate’ button in the trail description. This will open up a page that may display ‘Trailforks’ in the title; this is because we are leveraging Trailforks’ already established Trail Karma program to facilitate these donations.
Trail Karma is a Trailforks feature that allows users to donate to their local trail organizations or to trail organizations around the world that are responsible for the care and maintenance of trail systems. To read more about Trail Karma as part of Trailforks, please visit this article.
The donation runs through Paypal, and 100% of the donation will go to the trail organization. Because Trail Karma is a Trailforks feature, as a Gaia GPS user, you may be asked to log into Trailforks to make a donation.
If you have signed into Trailforks before as a Gaia GPS/Outside+ user, your Trailforks credentials are the same as your Gaia GPS/Outside+ credentials.
If you have not signed into Trailforks before, you will be asked to verify your email address, and you may receive a ‘suspicious login to your Trailforks account’ email. You will receive an error message stating that this is ‘your first login with an Outside account.’ If you try to log in again with your Gaia GPS credentials, you should be able to log in.
Once you have logged in, you will be on the Trailforks site and will end up on your Trailforks profile page, rather than the donate page. In order to donate, you will need to return to the Gaia GPS app and then tap ‘Donate’ once more on the trail association you wish to donate to.
We understand that this is not an ideal flow for our users, and we are working to fix this issue on the backend.
What does my donation to trail associations entail?
Toyota has contributed $100,000 in support of 20 selected trail associations. Each trail association participating in this campaign received $1,000 upfront, with the remaining $80,000 available as a dollar-for-dollar match. This means Toyota will match every dollar contributed by the Gaia GPS community up to $80,000, thus potentially doubling your impact! If the full match isn’t utilized, remaining funds will be evenly distributed among all participating trails.
