This article will show you how to pause or resume map downloads in the iOS app. In the iOS app, downloads do not happen in the background, and turning your screen off or switching to another app will pause your map downloads. If you return to the app and see your downloads are paused, follow the steps below to resume the downloads.
Alternatively, pausing map downloads can be useful when installing Gaia GPS on a new device if you want to download maps for a specific trip or area, but don't want to download all of your older maps.
- Resume All Downloads
- Resume Individual Downloads
- Pause Downloads
- Delete or Cancel a Map Download
- Downloads on Cellular
- Halt Downloads Entirely
Resume All Downloads
1. If downloads are incomplete, the Saved icon will show an upside-down arrow icon. Tap the Saved icon, then tap the green Downloading bar at the top of the screen to view your map downloads.
2. Tap Resume in the upper right corner to resume the map downloads.
Alternatively, you can also resume all downloads from the Saved menu with these steps:
1. Tap the Saved icon.
2. Change the filter in the top left to Maps.
3. In the upper right corner, tap the 3 dots to open the Action and Settings menu.
4. Tap Resume Download.
5. Tap Done.
Resume Individual Downloads
You can resume individual map downloads from the Saved menu.
1. Tap the Saved icon.
2. Change the filter in the top left to Maps.
3. Tap the more icon (circle with 3 dots) to the right of a map in the list
4. Tap Resume Download
Completed downloads no longer offer the Resume Download option.
Pause Downloads
1. Tap the Saved icon, then tap the green Downloading bar at the top of the screen to view your map downloads.
2. Tap Stop
Delete or cancel a map download
Deleting a map will also cancel its download. You can delete a map download with these steps:
Follow these steps to delete a downloaded map:
- Tap the Saved folder icon to open the Saved menu.
- Select Maps from the filter on the top left.
- Tap the more icon (circle with three dots) > Delete
Downloads on Cellular
When you create a map download when using cellular (not on wifi), Gaia GPS will ask you to confirm you want to download over cellular.
In addition, when on cellular, Gaia GPS will not automatically resume large map downloads, and you have to manually force it to do so as described above.
Halt Downloads Entirely
To halt downloads and prevent them from resuming in future sessions, go to the Settings tab, choose "Map Downloads,", and disable the "Auto-resume" switch.

I can't get partial downloads to resume. Tapping the "resume" button does nothing. Good wifi connection. I have endless frustrations with this app and downloads and find myself recreating work far, far too often.
Hi flifton,
I'm sorry you had trouble completing map downloads.
I've created a support ticket on your behalf and someone from the team will be in contact shortly.
Does this feature exist on android too? I don't see anything like this currently on my android app.
@JeremyUpsal
Yes, it is possible to pause and resume offline map downloads in the Android version of Gaia GPS. Click here for more information on how this is done in the Android app.
I am having issues completing map downloads.
I've set up multiple spots I want to have downloaded all the time, with plenty of space on my iPad Mini and i have internet wifi of 300mbps, (150mbps on a slow day). Some of these are downloading at like 30mbps, then go down to 500kbps, and then stop-without finishing.
So i stop it, close the app, open it up, start one up, it starts "downloading" and then at some point stops again. SO i have multiple map sections that are in queue to download that are all stopped, and I"m tring to do just one at at time, but each time it fails and won't resume properly.
Help?
@AZonaJP
I'm sorry you are having an issue downloading offline maps on your iPad.
Can you click the “Submit a Request” and include the names of the maps you are having an issue downloading?
Also, is there an error message displayed on the details page for the offline maps? If so, please include this information in your message to support.
