How do I track myself so I know I'm on the right trail?
I'm new to this - as in have never used this at all. I'm doing a Mr. St. Helens summit hike and need to load the map (route) I then need to know how to see the track I'm on so I can follow it back down.
I'm sure this is really easy but I'm not seeing a clear way to do it from what I see on the app. Any thoughts directions and/or sites would be helpful and appreciated.
Thanks,
RJ

It's very simple, here is an abbreviated version off the top of my head:
Creating route:
1) Either create a route on your mobile device or GAIAGPS using create a route and the snap to trail function with the GAIA base map or an Open Streets map such as Open Hiking.
2) Or create an account on GAIAGPS and search the "public" overlay for the trail that you want and download the GPX track.
3) Sync your phone / mobile device and the routes / tracks should be visible on your mobile device.
4) Download the surrounding map for "no cell" signal usage.
5) Follow the route / track by keeping the display arrow on the track / route.
OR
If you created the track ascending, simply follow the track back with the arrow over the track.
A word of caution, phone batteries die quickly in the cold with the display on... be prepared.
