Precariously close to cancelling Premium
I have had it for ages.. might be a decade or more. The more I use it, the more unmanageable the main map becomes. I have made numerous requests to have the eyeball (hide/unhide) feature that is so useful in the mobile app but it seems the desktop version, which is what I use for route planning and general management, is now off the developers radar. In the rare instance where there is a response in the community, it's usually something like.. we're working on it or view the route in the detailed map instead of main map.
Yeah.. that doesn't help.
I was using GaiaGPS.com for route creation (migrating to CalTopo) and when done, push that route out to a few other devices. Once I complete the route and can replace it with a track, (I've given up on recording tracks with Gaia due to poor battery power management and use my Suunto Ambit for recording.) I like to hide the original route from view. I don't want to delete it, as I might choose to use it again or use it as basis for a new route. I can hide routes, tracks and waypoints on the mobile app but not so on the desktop version.
When I looked for the benefits of Premium Membership I found this...
Premium Membership
As a Premium Member you'll get all Member and Free level benefits, plus:
- Unlock the full Gaia GPS maps catalog, with over 250 maps and overlays:
- NatGeo Trails Illustrated
- Backroad Mapbooks Canada
- ESRI World Imagery
- France IGN
- SwissTopo
- NeoTreks US Topo
- US Hunting Maps (GMUs, private land, public land, others)
- Use and download layered maps. Apply overlays to any map, such as hill-shading, contour lines, slope angle, and more.
While I have used the NatGeo maps a few times, I could live without them and I don't use any of the other maps. I do use the layering feature from time to time, so losing that is notable. That said.. is that it? Is that all I am gaining for the Premium monthly fee?
I've submitted a service ticket requesting details and haven't heard back other than the automated response. Sadly, that service ticket might be going to the same team in charge of developing the hide/unhide feature on the desktop version...
I think it's time to bail..
Does a non premium service limit export of tracks & routes? I need to push my historical data out to another platform.

@mmarziotto
I'm sorry for the frustration.
The main benefits of a Premium Membership are:- Access to 9 Premium Base Maps
- 30 Premium Overlays, including forecasts for snow and precipitation; shaded relief; public and private land; and more
- Ability to layer maps on top of one another, as you mentioned
- Priority support
We're always adding new map sources, too — sometimes several per month.
Another benefit of having a Premium Membership is being able to sync high-quality photos from your device to your account on gaiagps.com, but that seems like a less important consideration.
If you think that you do not need the Premium map layers or map layering capabilities, I'd recommend bumping down to the standard Membership, and I'd be happy to help you with that — just let me know.
Optimizing the Main Map on gaiagps.com
Since your workflow involves replacing planned routes with the recorded tracks, I recommend trying either of these methods for optimizing how your data is displayed on the gaiagps.com:- Option 1: Archive Routes that have been replaced by Tracks
- Archiving the saved routes you have hiked will hide them from the main map on gaiagps.com
- Archived routes will remaining in your account on gaiagps.com, but will not sync to your devices
- Option 2: Create a Custom Map Source based on your Routes
- Use Mapbox Studio to create a custom map source based on all of your saved routes
- Using the layered maps feature in your Premium Membership will let you adjust the visibility of all your routes on gaiagps.com or on your device
- New routes can be added to your custom map source by uploading them to your Mapbox Studio account and then refreshing gaiagps.com
- This option will also require toggling off the My Tracks overlay on gaiagps.com in order to just view the data on your custom map source
Exporting Data
You can export and import GPX or KML files from gaiagps.com or in the app with all of the Gaia GPS membership levels.0 -
Ah.. so the archiving helped immensely! I was able to scrub the main map of past routes. Also did the same for the accumulation of waypoints that were cluttering the map. Now I have a few more questions.... I'll start another thread.
