When are offline maps needed?

I'm new to Gaia and just learning the ins and outs. I recently made a Track in a part of Mexico that is far from cell service. The Track recorded and works just fine. My question is: If I was able to record a Track in that situation, when is it necessary to use offline maps? Thanks.

  Hi there,
   
  Thanks for using Gaia GPS.
   
  Since GPS works without a cell signal, you don't need service to use Gaia GPS in the wilderness.  The app allows you to download maps of your travel area in advance since you won't be able to retrieve map data from the server without an internet connection.
   
  You will be able to follow your location on a pre-downloaded map as long as your device is GPS enabled.
