Dots added to tracks

When recording a track the system places dots along the track.  There seems to be some pattern to them.  What do they represent?

They appear to show on active tracks only.

  I believe those are distance markers. See https://help.gaiagps.com/hc/en-us/articles/115003638628-Setting-Marker-Distance

  @LIWtoday is right. The dots along tracks are distance markers and will be placed on your set interval. You can adjust this setting in the Apple app by:
  -Open the app> Settings> Distance Markers & Notifications> Set your Distance Interval> Toggle on/off 'Marker' to hide or show these dots.
