GPS location slow to update lagging
Great app on iOS, love it. But on my Android head unit (Polaris Maxx), the GPS location is very slow to update. Several minutes. Very far away from "live" so very hard to use.
The GPS unit is an external device on this head unit, perhaps this has something to do with it.
All other apps such as OziExplorer and Google Maps work great and update as expected. Gaia seems to be the only one laggin.
Keen to make Gaia my primary maps app if we can get it working. Thanks for you help.
Similar problem to here but Android - https://help.gaiagps.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/1500001326761-New-app-position-lagging-and-showing-delayed-position

@hb9ehd I started a ticket with tech Gaia tech support and there is no timeline on the fix.
I cant even know if getting another android head unit will fix it the problem so I use other apps in the mean time.
What unit are you running? -
@nickunw
Thanks for opening a ticket with them. I am running a iPad mini 5. It works great for planning. But driving with the significant lack is a pain. Since the other apps are working great and Gaia GPS shows excellent GPS quality, I am convinced that this is just a software problem. Hope, that they can fix it soon. If they need a better tester, I’m happy to help. -
@hb9ehd you were running an iPad mini 5 with external GPS which was not working? Sounds like this is a problem across all devices, Apple or Android which run an external GPS.
This is another thread with the same issue - Problems using an external GPS
The ticket 1018374 I have open, Gaia says:
April 25, 2024 - it is a reported issue and our engineering team is working on a fix for this. Hopefully, the fix will be available on the next release of the updated version.
June 21, 2024 - Unfortunately, there is no update yet regarding the resolution for this issue. I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience.
June 28, 2028 - There is no ETA provided. I will bring this up in our next bug meeting and hopefully, I will be able to provide you an update.
So kinda sounds like this issue / bug is in the too hard basket leaving us with two option. Buy a new device with an internal GPS or find new mapping software.

GPS (Global Positioning System) is a vital tool for navigation, mapping, and location-based services. However, users may occasionally experience slow updates or lagging in GPS location. Below are the common reasons for this issue and practical solutions:Reasons for GPS Location Lagging or Slow Updates
-
Weak GPS Signal
- Occurs when you are indoors, surrounded by tall buildings, or in areas with dense trees.
- These obstacles can block the satellite signal, causing a delay in location updates.
-
Device Performance
- Older devices or those with low processing power may struggle to process GPS data quickly.
- A cluttered device with insufficient RAM or storage can also slow down GPS performance.
-
Outdated GPS Data or Software
- GPS applications or firmware that are outdated can cause inaccuracies or delays.
- Maps or cached location data might be outdated, leading to slower updates.
-
Power-Saving Mode
- Many smartphones limit GPS functionality to save battery.
- This reduces the frequency of location updates, causing lag.
-
Inaccurate Location Settings
- Using network-based location services instead of high-accuracy GPS may result in slower and less precise updates.
-
Software Bugs or App Issues
- Some apps may have bugs or issues that lead to lagging in GPS updates.
- Background apps or services may conflict with the GPS functionality of the app in use.
-
Poor Internet Connectivity
- GPS itself doesn't require the internet, but many location-based apps (e.g., Google Maps) rely on data for map rendering and real-time updates.
- Slow internet speeds or disconnections can delay map and location refreshes.
-
Limited Satellite Visibility
- GPS works best with at least 4 satellites. Limited visibility of satellites can cause delays in acquiring location data.

Confirming GAIA maps does not work on android head units or seemingly any device with an external GPS unit.
I have tried Gaia maps on several android headunits and all experience the same problem. After less than a minute, the location fails to update more than once every 3-5minutes.
It’s not head unit related as many other mapping software works without a hitch. Google maps ✅ OziExplorer ✅ WikiCamps ✅ more
It’s a real shame as Gaia as an overloading mapping could be fantastic
