I'm sorry there was an issue on your recent hike.

To extend the life on your battery while recording a hike, I recommend toggling off the compass and switching your iPhone into Airplane Mode. Force closing non-essential apps that are in the background will also help. Check out this article for more tips: Reduce Battery Loss.

I've given up on recording tracks with GaiaGPS on my iphone 6.  Even when I turn WiFi off, switch to Low Power & Airplane Mode and only display my location when requested, the battery still with GaiaGPS the only app running, the phone dies by the end of the day.. if it makes it that far.  I record my tracks with a Suunto Ambit which will last a few days with continuous tracking and charges in an hour using a 10000 mAh battery bank.

After my trek I import that track to GaiaGPS.com.  I am going to stop that practice as well if the developers don't give us a way to selectively hide and unhide routes and tracks on GaiaGPS.com

It might be the iphone6. I use an iPhone SE and have recorded 10+ hr hikes and had over 70% battery left. That was using airplane mode, WiFi and BT off. Of course, it can certainly be the software implementation by either Apple or Gaia. Good luck!

I came here to see if there was conversation about the Ambit and Gaia.

I use the Ambit for tracking along with Gaia.. if you any Ambit questions I'd be happy to help.

Here's a quick update on the iphone issue.  Early March I did a three day backpacking trip where temps were in the mid-teens.  The iPhone was useless..  once the phone got cold, it just quit.  Did some research on the battery condition and found it was only taking about 70% of it's original capacity and anytime It had to do any heavy processing it would going into limp-mode and ultimately crashed.

A quick search on Youtube revealed the battery change was pretty easy and Amazon had a new 2000 mAh battery and installation kit for under $30.  I also made a reflectix cozy for the phone to keep it warm.

After the change, battery life and horsepower are insane.  My next backpacking trip was quite different.  With the phone in Airplane mode and Low Battery, I went two days before the level dipped below 95%.  Admittedly, I wasn't logging for two days.. in fact I didn't log that trip at all, but I was using Gaia for navigation constantly.  On my next day hike I logged three hours of hiking and lost less than 5% battery capacity.

So...  for $30 and little time, I am back in business.  Full Gaia functionality and new life breathed into my iphone 6
