map sources vs download maps

Ok im still new to Gaia. I have downloaded map sources(open cycle maps, landscape, mapbox, etc), to use exact terminology according to my display, from my ipad mini but have never downloaded a map area using the red zoom in or out feature. So here is my problem: When i plan a route out and follow it when i get to an area i know had street names or labels on them on the ipad mini or my desktop while at home under wifi, THEN when im out on the field all the street names or labels have disappeared. Am i supposed to download a map area using the red box zoom in or out feature for the street names and labels to appear?

i use a garmin inreach bluetoothed to my ipad mini(non cellular) to provide gps(coordinate?) input while in a no service area/no cellular area.

  Sorry for the confusion.
  
  Yes, you will need to download an offline map of the area you plan to visit in order to view all of the map details while in the field.
