Unreliable route data when offline

Lately I've been encountering an issue while offline (during backcountry trips) where when I draw out a new route to estimate distances, the route won't snap to the actual trail and instead just creates a straight line. This happens in areas where I've saved high resolution offline maps prior to the trip. When I'm online, the same routes will immediately snap to the trail, but about 50% of the time when offline, it won't snap to the trail.

Prior to the recent updates, there used to be a checkbox when downloading a map to save route data, but I no longer see this checkbox. I wonder if I'm missing something or if there's a way to make offline route data more reliable.
