I know how to create a new route, but how do I save the new route with the distances labeled between the way points?

  It's not possible to save a Route with the distances labeled between points. Sorry about that. 
  
  However, you may be interested in turning on Distance Markers to help visualize distances on your Route. Here's how: Setting Marker Distance on iOS
