Straight Line v Snap to Trail

I read the discussion on the Snap to Trail .... however, what if I want a straight line so I can calculate bearing and distance to the actual destination?

  when I'm making a route on the PC interface, Create Route, there's a selection near the bottom that says Routing Mode.  Straight Line is one of the choices.
