Downloaded maps disappearing

I have had to re-download the same map for a backcountry/no-signal area that I frequent 3 times now.  Why are maps that I specifically save for offline use disappearing?
It usually takes me two full nights of running the download to get the full map of a 7mile-square area (isn't that crazy slow?!), so this is a major pain.  It's also really dangerous as I'm heading out into the backcountry with a non-working tool.
