App no longer functions properly
I've had issues with the app opening real slow or not at all. My tracks and waypoints appear intermittently and the app frequently freezes. I use Gaia on an Ipod mini4 and use all the other apps including google maps with no issues at all. Any ideas on what the problem is?

You are not alone. The latest updates have introduced numerous issues making it extremely unreliable. As someone working in emergency services I can simply not rely on it anymore. I just did a full upgrade to the mini 6 in the hopes that helps, but its a terrible answer to the greater issue. I'll report back when I have a sense of how the latest iPad deals with the problems.

Issues persist even with the latest models of iOS devices. Crashed or locked up multiple times while responding to a wildland fire via helicopter.

I am using IOS 15.5 on both a iPad Pro and a iPhone 13 pro max, that’s the current latest version of IOS.
Meanwhile I keep getting emails and messages from the Gaia app saying like Gaia support thinks that the current IOS is a way older version.
This highly indicates that Gaia’s programmers/support are way out of date.
This will never improve the problems of the numerous bugs.
I continue to use Gaia only by spending many hours/days that would not be needed if Gaia worked as described in documentation.
It is very insulting that Gaia support keeps sending messages to login.
After more than two years dealing with Gaia I certify I know how to login.0 -
Just wanted to chime in and agree that I've been having issues recently with the app. Freezing, slow to respond, etcetera. I've force quit and restarted the app and also restarted the iPhone to no avail. I'm running iOS 15.5 and Gaia App v2022.5 on an iPhone 13 Pro Max.
I've been out on IPWA patrol and my last three patrols I've been trying to add waypoints for downed/problem trees that need maintenance and the app has proven almost impossible to use. The issues are so bad I'm surprised they weren't noticed before the update was released. Surely there's alpha and beta testing before updates are released.....Frustrating
UPDATE: I'm also seemingly not able to complete an app/website Sync triggered from the App. Just gets stuck in a "In Progress" loop forever.

I am having the same issues as everyone else. App is unusable at this time will not load and if it does it is so slow that I can't use it. Very disappointed at this time with the app.

I would not go so far as to say Gaia is completely unusable. More like it is highly defective.
It requires careful study to get around the poor programming, however. As a result a lot of user time is involved.
then it can be forced to be useful. Not trustworthy for emergency use, however.0 -
The recent iOS app update to v2022.6 unfortunately doesn't solve the freezing/app not working issues. I'm still having issues with the app freezing while I'm trying to use it, rendering it unusable for me at this time. In addition, I still can't get it to sync.
Regarding Walt's comments: while there are issues with poor programming/UI that make the app cumbersome to use, that's not what this specific thread discussion is about. Unfortunately for some of us here the app literally can't be used because it freezes and doesn't work. Or a tap takes minutes to trigger the desired action. That's a big difference between multiple requests to login issues (which supposedly were fixed in this recent update).
Again, this isn't a comment on the user experience or issues like that. It's about not being able to use the map in the field, can't pinch and zoom, can't pan the map around, the map freezes, the app freezes, can't tap the layers to turn on/off different layers, can't sync the app to the website. Etcetera. I'm sitting here in front of my computer with the app open trying to pinch and zoom and it will not work.

The app freezes for me too, but in nearly all instances it will eventually take it’s next step.
I wait it out and do not stack steps. Only when it takes the current step do I add another.
It is a slow process, as it also cannot maintain an accurate sync list so lots of repeating downloads.
I am currently using the latest version of Gaia, iOS and so on.
Starting from beginning of May I have downloaded mapping of part of the state of Georgia.
Each map download section limited to just under 10K tiles of layers from 12 map sources.
Currently at 52 of these downloads occupying a total of 195GB storage on my
iphone 13 Pro with a second set of the same on my iPad pro’s storage.
I routinely use and display the maps using CarPlay on the dash of my Ranger.
Yes, occasionally Gaia crashes or displays blurry on that, but most problems are in downloading.
So, yes I do use Gaia, I have worked out how to do so even as bad as it is.
How can one say the problems are not in the app programming or instructions?0 -
The app crashes on my iPhone 13 pro whenever I try to use the "guide me" function. I can use it for seeing where I am on a map but can not see where I am in regards to the elevation profile so while not useless definitely lags the competition. I have talked with Gaia representative who was very nice and said they were aware of these issues but basically didn't think a fix would be forthcoming soon.

On an 8/1/22 hike the app constantly freezes. Then sometimes crashes. The track I created looks ridiculous.
I had a fully rebooted, 36GB storage remaining, and only had the app and camera open. This is unacceptable.

I am also having most of the above issues once I downloaded the most recent version I-phone 7. My buddy's (Android) was working fine but he had not updated - I told him "don't do it!" This app is now not worth using - a paper map may be my "new version".

We have yet to hear anything from Gai on this issue. I just cancelled my subscription to not renew which is to bad I felt that Gai was a great program when it works but I will switch to OnX.

Shawn, I’ve paid up to 2023 and I give them the benefit of the doubt until then. But yes, the iOS app is failing now.

I'm glad to see i'm not the only one feeling frustrated with the iPhone app. I'm runing it on an iPhone 13 pro, thinking it would be better than my iPhone 8 plus... nope. I emailed some questions and concerns and never received any kind of answer.

Has Gaia responded to this chain? I've been having "freezing" issues for months when uploading routes and waypoints to my device. It freezes on "In Progress" and does not upload.

No Gaia has not responded. Either they don't pay attention or don't care. I had a friend look at my Ipad and he felt that there must be corrupt data in some of the map downloads. So I deleted all of the maps and redownloaded them and it has worked fine so far.

I have found that the same thing worked for me. I deleted all the Map Downloads and then redownloaded.

Well, how do you like the new feature? When I go to open a folder containing waypoints, the app goes puff. Happens on both iPad and iPhone (latest iOS).

I just tried opening a folder containing many hundreds of waypoints and did not have any issues. iPhone 13 Pro Max running iOS 16.2 (not the latest, which is 16.3.1 at the time of this post). Have you force closed the app and restarted your devices? Are you running 16.3.1? It helps to know what the specific iOS is.

I’ve closed down the app and restarted the devices to no avail. I’m running 16.3.1 on both devices. iPhone 11 and iPad Pro 11” latest version.

I don't know enough to guess if it's the latest iOS version you have but it might be. Another option to try would be to remove the app completely and reinstall it back to your phone. You'll have to re-download any offline maps you've downloaded in the past but I found this helped me previously when I was having other issues with the app. Good luck!

GAIA continues to crash, when the app does open it freezes then closes. I've updated IOS and the app. Sadly Outside Magazine who bought GAIA does not seem to care.

I believe the issue is corrupt data on some of the downloaded maps. A friend of mine suggested I delete all downloaded maps and re download. It fixed the issue and it has remain fixed for over a year. It's a pain but it was worth it for me.

3 years later on a new Pixel 9 with max memory added and max storage and always plugged in.
It still heats up the phone and stops working.0
