Cross Country Ski Trails
AnsweredI am looking for a map with cross-country ski trails in Mt Hood National Forest. I made the mistake of using the USFS Roads and Trails map and it was completely wrong for the Yellowjacket Nordic Trail. The Gaia Winter map does not have local cross-country ski trails either. Any suggestions?
I am using IOS.

Hi there,
Thanks for using Gaia GPS. Sorry, you were having trouble finding a trail.
It looks like some of these Nordic Trails may appear on Gaia Topo if they are also open in the summer for hiking or biking.
You could look and see if public tracks are available in this area and use those to create a route.
- Here are the steps: Add Public Tracks to your Account
- Create, Edit, and Measure Routes in the app
Gaia Topo and Gaia Winter, as well as several other sources in the app, are based on OpenStreetMap (OSM) data, an Open-source and public mapping project.
If a trail does not appear on Gaia Topo then it most likely has not been added to OSM.
You can actually contribute to OSM in order to add trails and features to the map. Read more about this and find instructions here: Contribute to OpenStreetMap
Additionally, there are special tags that are required for winter trails to show up correctly on the map. They are as follows:
1. Alpine ski run:
a.piste:type = downhill
2. Nordic ski trail:
a.piste:type = nordic
3. Snowshoe / fatbike / uphill trail:
a.piste:type = snowshoe, fatbike, uphill, backcountry, or skitour
4. Difficulty:
a.piste:difficulty = easy, intermediate, advanced, expert, freeride, or extreme
5. Name:
a.piste:name=
If you decide to contribute any updates to OpenStreetMap, you'll see the changes in Gaia GPS in two to three weeks. If you have any more questions, please contact support here: https://gaiagps.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/requests/new
