iPad and GPS gurus, help please!
AnsweredSo after many years of using Motion-X I'm migrating back to Gaia. (I first used Gaia back in 2013 but found MX a bit easier) But since MX is no longer supported, Gaia here I come!
Some background.... for past 8 years I have run a WIFI only iPad mini (generation 1) with MX and and it worked perfectly; all over New England and Central America. No cellular, just download map tiles. I'm looking to buy a new iPad mini and I'm reading that the WIFI only version does not have GPS "chip". People are saying only way to get GPS function on iPad mini is with WIFI+G4 version. True/false? Perhaps MX had some sort of GPS soft capability that allowed a WIFI version to connect to GPS satellites? Perhaps my WIFI Gen 1 Mini had GPS but it was dropped in subsequent versions?
Ok, here is the question part: will Gaia work as MX did on a WIFI only iPad, with downloaded map tiles? I dont need the Cellular feature of an iPad (unless its the only way to get GPS now) I'm not looking for all the data you can get with cellular connection (gas stations, food, tourist info) or for routing. This new unit will be for downloaded GPX files for motorcycle riding and tracking routes (AKA bread-crumbing)
TIA

Thanks for using Gaia GPS.
The short and direct answer is that your mobile device will need a GPS chip in order to know your position.
My understanding is that the new iPad models only include GPS chips with the cellular versions. So yes, you will need to purchase the iPad with cellular/GPS capability in order to use it as you've described.
Let me know if you have any additional questions.
