There is currently no good way to calculate distance along a route/track other than all the way to the start or end in "Guide Me" mode.
Offline routing is a positive step, but since this feature simply takes the shortest path it will often diverge from the route/track I intend to follow, which especially for long-distance hiking, can be completely different.
The only other way to determine distance along a route is to manually count distance markers, but especially for longer distances this can be quite tedious and error-prone.
Perhaps if the user is in "Guide Me" mode a long press on a point along the route they are following could show the distance to that point, along the route? Or as another possibility Guthook has an interface mode that allows the user to long press on two points along a route line to show the distance, elevation change, etc.
Having used Gaia many times on long-distance hiking trips, the lack of this functionality is one of my biggest annoyances with an otherwise wonderful app.
