Map Rotates on its own in Course up mode
-
I tired the app in 3 different android devices and it's the same in all of them. The issue is with the App. And it popped up from the last update onwards. Please fix it asap. This is ridiculous. What sort of testing do you do before releasing an update? A bug as obvious as this one should have been identified before the release.

@jithu and @sbarr
Sorry for the trouble. This issue may be exacerbated when you are slowing down or speeding up.
I have created a bug report and will continue to track this. I'll reach out to you if I have any questions to help diagnose the issue.
It may help to calibrate your compass:- On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Maps app
- Make a figure 8 until your compass is calibrated. You should only have to do this a few times.
- The blue beam should become narrow and point in the right direction.

the same problem actually exists even when in "north up" mode, but in that case it's less obtrusive as only the direction-of-travel arrow jumps around (rotates randomly).

Hey all,
This issue with the map rotating should be fixed in the latest version of 2021.7 which is now available in beta.
Please follow these instructions to join the beta program:
If you don't wish to join the beta program, version 2021.7 should be live on the Play Store early next week. -
Version 2021.9 still seems to have the issue. Using a galaxy tab a7 lite mounted in landscape mode flips about 180 degrees at each stop. When resuming forward travel the map reverts to correct orientation. It’s quite frustrating. Google maps does not seem to be affected and works as expected.

Through deduction, it seems miscalculation of the the compass heading seems, at least part, related to the issue. When disabling sensors, including compass, the issue is not present. Heads up works normally and does not invert (180 degree or so flip) when stopping/starting. A support request has been logged. Hoping for a quick response, which has so far been unanswered.

Hi Jake,
We emailed you directly, but also wanted to post here in case others come across this issue.
We think that this is related to the Android compass. When you go below a certain speed threshold, the device stops calculating bearing from GPS and starts using the compass value, which is not as accurate. We are working on a fix and will let you know when it's available.

Are they ever going to get this fixed? Google maps dosent do this so there has to be a way to fix it. I also use Cgeo for geocaching and it gives me the option of turning off the compass and just using gps which seems like it could be a good solution. I also have used Backcounty Navigator which does not have this problem.
Come on Gaia get this issue fixed its been an issue for way too long.

I noticed this issue is still happening for me. I use Gaia extensively for off-roading when there is considerable jostling. When my tablet is vertical I have the issue, but if I lay it down flat the problem goes away. Laying it down flat won't help me on the trails. Perhaps it's related to something with the Android OS. The same thing happens on my phone. However a friend of mine who has an iPad and iPhone has no issues.
