Dedicated navigation device? Which one?
Hi, I’m currently looking into hardware for longer expeditions (multi-day, offroad, no signal) and I’m wondering how you run Gaia GPS outside of a regular smartphone setup.
I travel by motorcycle, and a phone just isn’t ideal due to vibrations, direct sunlight, heat, rain, etc. The battery also suffers a lot.
I’d like a dedicated device with a larger screen where I can comfortably overlay map layers.
What are you using?
A rugged Android device, a tablet, or a navigation unit that supports these kinds of apps?
I’ve been looking at a Samsung tablet, but I’m concerned about how the charging port would handle vibrations and potential drops of the bike.
Does anyone have experience with Carpe Iter devices? How do they perform? I like their new navigation unit, it seems close to what I’m looking for, but I don’t have any hands-on experience yet.
I’d really appreciate real-world feedback from the field.
