I agree. Zooming in to find dispersed campgrounds is very difficult. Sometimes I search an area and I’m not zoomed in enough and I miss the only campground in that area. Also, wouldn’t it be cool to be able to search for dispersed ( or otherwise) campgrounds by icon only? Instead of using the search tool to search for a campground by name, which I probably don’t know the name of, but by entering the camping icon for a given area?

Agreed. Not sure what you're after, but I think Reserve America or Recreation.gov used to have something like this: a large pin with a number in zoomed out views meaning "# in this general area" and then as one zoomed in they would start to separate and be more distinguishable as individual campgrounds.

Hi Krull, I'm trying to better understand your use case.

What's your data source for USFS Dispersed Camp locations? I'm not aware of any official sources, so I maintain my own collection of waypoints with photos for the campsites I've found while exploring the national forest, and those waypoints are visible at all zoom levels so it sounds like you're encountering a different issue. Maybe the Gaia staff can take another look at this request with more details about what we want.

@Kvangork USFS does have a file with all dispersed campsites listed, but it doesn't differentiate them very well and when I uploaded it to my map, it felt way too cluttered and useless.  If you drop me your email address, I'd happily send it to you.

The source I would LIKE to use is USFS rec site layer (already in Gaia) to show dispersed campsites in a "zoomed out" view.

Example: Zoomed out view, no dispersed campsites listed.

Zoomed in view: Cougar Dispersed Camping listed.

Maybe that Cougar dispersed site is not part of the USFS layer, but if it is not, I have the same request - how can we get dispersed campsites to show up in "zoomed out" views?  Can we get a specific "Dispersed Camping" Layer?

Maybe Gaia can use the list I have and do a better job designating the different sites than USFS?

Thanks for the screenshots, they’re super helpful!

The “Cougar dispersed camping” point of interest in the GaiaTopo map layer is coming from openstreetmap. It can be found (and edited!) here:

    https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=14/44.0646/-122.2395

One possible option would be to add each campsite from your USFS list to OSM, but that probably still leave them invisible when zoomed out, or cause the same cluttering effect that you experience when uploading them personally. I think the mapping software feature we’re asking Gaia to add is called “clustering” for feature overlays. It’s already supported for personal waypoints (as shown in this screenshot):

I’ve upvoted this request, and hope our discussion helps the Gaia staff understand and prioritize it. Happy camping!

Yes - this is precisely what I was hoping to see. Thanks for posting the clarifications!

Will add my vote for this! I currently use freecampsites.net and have donated to their cause, but it would be nice to see everything on one map. Also wondering about including designated areas in places that require an annual permit such as Arizona. Maybe that is a topic for another thread!

Just started on Gaia and dispersed camping is my first question.  When I get a MVUM from a ranger station it shows some (not all) dispersed camping sites as "DC".  Why do these not show up on the MVUM layer?  Has anyone found a better place to find DC sites?

MVUMs (paper version) have designated sites noted (by dots on either right, left, or both sides of FS roads), however, GAIAgps HAS NOT included those, even in their 'premium' MVUM (USFS) layer. I have requested they add those into the map layer, but so far, they have not.
