Why is search generally awful and inconsistent?

The search feature has been a weak spot for some time now. I have lost track how many times I will search for a city and it won't show up on gaia and I have to go to Google maps and then find the general area back on the gaia map and zoom in manually. Same with features like a hot spring or what not. Have to find it with Google maps and then manually find on gaia. The search results are also organized horribly often giving me results from 6 states away with no way to filter the results by location or type.

 

Often repeating a search that was blank earlier will show results later and it seems to have no rhyme or reason as to where the map was set of what layers were active or what level things are zoomed in at. You can never trust it to find anything. 

Why is search so bad?
