Course-Up mode very unresponsive
Hi there, I'm having some issues with 'Course Up' mode on my Gaia GPS iOS app that make the feature pretty unusable for me. I use Gaia primarily in my car for off-road navigation.
Specifically, after tapping on the 'locate' icon to enable 'Course Up' mode (https://help.gaiagps.com/hc/en-us/articles/115003639148-Showing-Your-Location-on-the-Map) my map re-orients into course-up mode but then it doesn't update to move along with my location.
For the map to update I need to tap on 'locate' again to centre on my location. As soon as I enable course-up mode again my map stops updating it's location.
Do any of you face the same issues? Are you able to use course-up mode to follow a track or a route accurately?
I reached out to Gaia support about this a few months ago in early December and they acknowledged the bug but they have yet to fix it. Surely an accurate and functioning course-up mode is a core part of any GPS app right?

I used the app for my first time today, on my iPad, while driving off road and saw similar behavior. I had Course Up turned on and track recording turned on. The tip of the track recording trace would keep up with my position on the map but the position arrow would lag behind. It was frustrating when I was looking for a turn and I would physically come to the turn long before the arrow was there. Clearly the built in GPS in the iPad was giving a good position since the track recording trace was keeping up with actual position.

Hello all,
I'm just popping in to let you know that we have a bug report open for this issue and we're looking into a fix.
In the meantime, please make sure that your location permissions are set to "Always" by following these steps:Also, closing any other apps running in the background while using Gaia GPS may help.
We'll update this thread as soon as we have an update. -
Same issue here, with my iPad Mini. The red line advances properly, but the arrow lags WAY behind and the map centers on the arrow. So I am basically driving off the map constantly, making Course mode totally useless for seeing upcoming turns.
In Compass mode, the responsiveness is fine but its far less suited to driving.
We used this app all day every day in Baja two years ago and it was flawless. Something has changed for the worse. i'd be happy to be able to reload the two year old version if it was made available.

We are still working on fixing this issue, sorry about that.

Have been using Gaia since august 2021, course up worked great then a couple of months ago the course up developed this problem. Planned a callback and told me it was being worked on, then a week later it started to work perfectly, great I thought Gaia must have found the problem
Then last week they sent out this new map layer (beta) setting, intermittent course up came back even worse, turned off the beta layer (which is useless by the way) restated the program still bad, I completely deleted the app this morning and reinstalled in hope that it will work, I downloaded a free trial of OnX and it is starting to look very attractive as it works well!!! -
I'm having the same issue with this KEY piece of functionality. I use this to follow motorcycle off-road tracks, and not having the map always up is super frustrating. As others on this thread have commented, the map stops following my progress as soon as I tap on that icon. Compass mode works fine.

I also had Gaia exit course mode unexpectedly while I was driving. I have a Joying head unit with 1920x1200 resolution. The locate icon is tiny and on the far right side of the screen. There is no chance of touching it while driving to get back into course mode.
If I touch one finger to the screen and drag it, Gaia exits course mode. It seems that I was doing a two finger pinch to zoom out, and one finger drags too soon, this changes the navigation mode from course to off.
I enabled the + and - zoom buttons, but they are also tiny and on the far right side of the screen. There is a high probability that trying to use them will exit course mode.
There is a solution - use a one finger double tap to zoom in, and a two finger double tap to zoom out. Another option is to use the two finger pinch / spread gesture properly: touch both fingers to the screen, pause, then pinch or spread.
For those of us who use course mode while driving (and who doesn't?) Gaia currently prevents us from panning the screen to better see something on the edge of the screen. This causes course mode to exit, otherwise the location arrow would quickly return to the center of the screen. The obvious solution is to have the pan motion exit course mode, wait a few seconds, then return to course mode. The wait time should be user specified, but 5 seconds would be a good default.

Is there a fix yet for this?? Got a big ride coming up that I assist the organizers with - over 200 riders. And Im planning to have many use Gaia - we ride fast single track and need to have preloaded tracks on the map screen. And Course Mode. But as soon as we touch the screen to zoom, or pan, it reverts back to the cross hair-off mode or the compass mode. We will likely need to switch everyone to OnX - love Gaia - but this is super frustrating.

Hahaha. Yes. This is silly and is been years, I’d suspect since the apps creation.
I have sent in trouble tickets, many of them and always get the same (out of the can) response.
The app is feature rich but functionally poor.
I’ve been a loyal customer (paying yearly) for a long time. However a few months ago I decided to find another app that works better, and I have. I’ll be canceling my subscription in a month or so.
Ask the best.

We are still working on fixing this issue, sorry about that.I'm a retired programmer and I suspect that this could be fixed easily
- if the display is bigger than a phone then start the app in course up mode
-while in course up mode, allow pan & zoom for 5 seconds, then revert to course up mode
It sure seems that Gaia is ignoring this bug, why is that?

I have reported this a number of times, and it does still happen.
I use a WiFi 8th gen ipad and a Garmin glo receiver, I just make sure when I turn it on for the days gps I make sure I go to Bluetooth settings first, make sure the glo is connected then Inopen the Gaia app, in this order the course app works perfectly, if I accidentally open the Gaia app first the issue will be there I then do a quick shutdown of Everything and then do it the way I have said and it again works perfectly.
Not a good fix but it works -
While there shouldn't be a need for a work around such as this, I appreciate you sharing what you have found to work. I will pay attention to this next time and see if I get similar results. I have an ipad mini 5 with a dual xgps150a.
That this is still an issue after years and years is just unbelievable. -
Nov 2023
Used OSMand for years on Android & iOS, never an issue with the heading / course mode.
Wanted to try Gaia, paid for subscription prior to a 200-mile offroad dualsport event this past weekend.
The course mode failed me badly while following imported gpx tracks.
The app is uselss if it can't do this.
SUPPORT TEAM: Any updates?

A fellow user, r/davidhally / David Hallyburton (Location marker / arrow doesn't move with map – Gaia GPS) provided a fix for this issue which is likely to be applicable for other Android phones. Not sure about iPhone.
Go to Settings > Developer Options and set the following:
Window animation scale = 1x
Transition animation scale = 1x
Animator duration scale = 1x
These are supposed to be the default values, but mine were set to "Off" by default. Once I changed them all to 1x, the location marker followed along flawlessly.
