Android auto status (UPDATE: it's done!)
CompletedI see that Carplay support has just been released. Can we assume that there will be an announcement for Android Auto, or failing that, a reduction in price for the feature disparity that Android users will be experiencing?
-
@Ryan ..yes it has been a long wait!
I have been a dedicated backcountry navigator user, but never made the jump to their new platform. I have been waiting to see who gets AA support, and with google opening things up, gaia supporting carplay already, and a friends also jumping into gaia, I decided it was time.
-
Damn, just purchased the 5-year premium. I had thought Gaia already supported Android Auto, but see it's only Carplay. Kind of regretting my choice now. Can we bump AA to the top of the dev queue here? It's a deal breaker for a lot of users. Even app-on-screen without navigation would tide us over.

I too would love to see this happen... google atleast doesnt seem to be the blocker anymore. Unfortunately their jobs page doesnt indicate that they are looking at further android development (just maps, and iOS) - thats normally a good indication of what a company's upcoming priorities are....
-
Now that Gaia is paired with Trails Offroad, the only thing holding me back from a premium membership is the AA compatability. Right now I'm still pinning waypoints into Google maps for overlanding in my wrangler. It works, but is time consuming, and doesn't allow for impromptu route changes.

Dear Andrew and Gaia GPS Team,
Your product is fantastic, but still limited in functionality. I would subscribe today if Android Auto were available. I can't help but note 3 things:
- Google now allows 3rd party navigation apps on Android Auto.
- Android market share is substantial: 70% worldwide, 40% US.
- This thread is >1 year old, but still says "Not Planned".
Please consider responding / updating the response to this feature request as a courteous gesture to your Android-using customers (both current and future) and an overall act of professionalism.
Kindly,
Stephen K.

Good point Hogan! Everyone found out about the Android Auto maps access at the same time...it's just a matter of who gets there first and gets it right. Plenty of room for everyone in this space. Even though I love both onX and Gaia, I use them for different use cases...onX is great for trail discovery and planning...while Gaia is great for no non-sense live navigation and tracking.

Hello all,
Google recently began allowing 3rd party apps to join their beta program for Android Auto. This program is still early access.
Google may change their mind or requirements at any time, so we can't promise that Gaia GPS is coming to Android Auto, but we're beginning to work on it.
To get started, this week we'd like to invite you to help beta test Turn-By-Turn navigation in the app. This is one of the core features to make routing work properly in Android Auto.
With Turn-By-Turn navigation, when you press Guide Me on a route, the app will now open the new navigation experience with turn-by-turn directions. No longer will it simply draw a straight line to the closest point.
If you're interested in testing TBT, join our beta program:- Become an Android Beta Tester
- Update to version 2021.2
- Open a Route and use Guide Me to use the new turn-by-turn navigation mode
- Feedback can be shared with android@gaiagps.com

This comment is pinned to the first page, but in case anyone missed the update:

+ 1 for Android Auto
Gaia is very good for 4x4 offroad, but in phone screen is difficult to use.
My 4x4 has multimedia with Android Auto, big screen, and this solution now is common in many cars / suvs.
It'll be a plus if Gaia team invest in this solution, not only for us, but also to Gaia itself, if was the first in gps's apps domain to do that!

Chris Hill - tried turn-by-turn in a route and works, if we are next to the route (otherwise we should use the Drive option).
With tracks the best option is to convert it to route to use this new option.
I think that turn-by-turn (beta) deserves a specific topic inside "Android Feature Requests" , if you need user inputs. You can copy the posts here to there. In this Android Auto Status topic the thing is lost in the crowd (?) although is important be referenced here.

I just bought a Polestar 2 with Androit Auto as the operating system.
The app is not yet available in the Android Automotive OS store. Is this in development or how can I get the app ?

I have been a beta tester for a long time but the app is not available for the Polestar 2.
just see the diffrence ...
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android_Automotive
In contrast to Android Auto, Android Automotive is a full operating system running on the vehicle's device, not relying on a smartphone to operate.
