iPhone XS and maps

I have encountered a significant difference in using XS versus my older iPhone 6. What Gaia Support is telling me makes ABSOLUTELY no sense based upon use of my iPhone 6.

Previously, I went out into the field (whether 1 mile from home or 100), turned on Gaia, found my location, hit record, and set out...with a detailed topo map. I DID NOT download any map areas before leaving home. No matter where I was, the map was there (in detail).

I'm doing the same with my XS, except that the map only partially downloads with only minimal detail. It finds my location and tracks my movement, but on a screen with virtually no contour lines.

Gaia support says this is because I need to download a map of the area I am hiking in before leaving home. 

Again, I have NEVER had to do this with the iPhone 6.

What gives? Anybody know?

  More info: I should say that maps/layers accessed at home are full of detail (on both XS and iPhone 6). In the field, maps/layers are just as detailed on the iPhone 6 but lack detail on XS. Again, I have never downloaded a map, I have simply selected the layer I wish to have displayed.

  It sounds like the map information is being cached on your phone. As you explore the map, the app caches map information to help the map load faster. 
  
  While this information is available when offline, I don't recommend relying on it as there is no guarantee that is will be available to view. Downloading a map before heading out of service will ensure you have the map information you need.
