Downloaded/saved maps list is confusing
AnsweredWhen downloading multiple layers of maps, the Saved Maps list becomes very confusing. Each layer seems to have its own entry, but if you delete one layer, you delete them all. Renaming applies to only layer at a time, so if you rename one, you can't tell what other layers are in that group. Some sort of hierarchical view of downloaded maps and layers would make a lot of sense.

Woah - that's weird - when I killed Gaia GPS and then restarted it, the Saved Maps list stopped displaying multiple entries for each layer. I had previously tried displaying only Waypoints and then back to Saved Maps and that didn't reset the display. Definitely looks like a bug in the Saved Maps code.

Hey Toby,
Thanks for posting.
When you first download layered maps, it will sometimes display each layer separately while the app is processing the new download. After the download is finished, the maps should be listed as one download. You can also restart the app if you are not seeing the layered maps group together right away.
If the Layered Maps option is toggled off, this tells the app you only want to view one map at a time and it will list each downloaded layer separately in the saved folder.

Hi Robyn,
The bug I'm reporting here is very reproducible. One should not have to explicitly kill and restart an iOS application in order for a Setting change to take effect. If I turn off the Layered Maps option, then Saved Maps continues to display the maps grouped until I explicitly kill and restart Gaia GPS. If I then turn on the Layered Maps option, Saved Maps continues to display the maps ungrouped until I explicitly kill and restart Gaia GPS. It appears that the code that displays Saved Maps caches the setting at launch time.
Hmmm - this is even weirder! It incompletely caches the setting! If I launch Gaia GPS with Layered Maps disabled, the description text for the downloaded maps shows just one type (i.e. "Gaia Topo (feet)") per map layer (so if I have three map layers, it shows each separately, with the correct description). If I then enabled Layered Maps (and don't explicitly kill and relaunch Gaia GPS), then Saved Maps continues to show each map layer separately, but the description for each layer lists all of the layers (i.e. "Gaia Topo (feet), World Imagery, Shaded Relief (US)"). What's really weird is that it doesn't happen immediately - I have to scroll up and down, and as maps disappear from the visible section and then come back, the text changes.
The same thing happens in reverse - if I disabled Layered Maps, then Saved Maps continues to show one entry for each set of layers, but the description text switches (as I scroll things out of and into view) to showing just the base layer (i.e. "Gaia Topo (feet)".
Whenever that setting toggles, there needs to be a message to the Saved Maps view code that causes it to completely reset its logic and refresh its display cache.
Should I report this separately to support@gaiagps.com so it can be entered into the bug database? I wouldn't triage it up that high, but it's definitely one that could really confuse a new user.

No problem - I should have delved a little deeper in the initial report. I do enjoy the process of identifying a bug and then scoping the edges and corners of it to bring it fully into visibility for a development team, I just sometimes get a little lazy! I figure that it's my responsibility when I'm an end user to generate the sort of bug report that as a developer I would be excited to get. :-)
