Tracks disappear at wider zoom levels?

    Hi ljwodker,

Yes, currently zooming out to view large areas, like the entire west coast, will cause track lines to no longer display. This is done purposely to help declutter the map view.

I can definitely see how being able to view track lines at wide zoom angles would be helpful, especially for pilots.

I think it's possible that we could show longer tracks at higher zoom levels, while still hiding shorter ones that tend to clutter the map.  I'll discuss this idea with the team.

In the meantime, I encourage anyone else interested in this to vote and comment on this post.

This seems like it could be pretty easily handled as a ratio... if the track length is "much much" less than the zoom level, you hide the track.  That way local hikes don't show up when looking at a continental scale, etc?

this feels like a bug to me. I'll import a track, see it, and then when I zoom in for details the track will disappear, in whole or in part. Oddly, after some time, it will work properly.

Another oddity is that very long tracks (like a flight from SFO to Sydney) shows up in places with a very long horizontal line - I'm sure it's some bad drawing logic when you cross 180deg longitude or something along those lines...

    Hey Todd,

    Thanks for reaching out.

We are aware of this issue and a fix should be available in the next app release.

The best workaround for tracks to appear is to zoom in/out on the main map or relaunching the app. This should show your data as expected.

If your data isn’t showing up, even after closing and relaunching the app, or if you simply have any questions, please email support@gaiagps.com.

    Hey ljwobker,

Track recording can be inconsistent when flying especially when crossing the international dateline.

@melanie - should I take that as "we know it's broken and don't have any plans to fix it" ?

(Which is fine, just wanted to make sure...)

    Hi ljwobker,

Yes, to clarify, this issue is not something we are planning on addressing at this time.

If you have any other questions, please send us a note by clicking the Help button at the bottom of the page.

Just naught the app and the functionality is great but the tracks disappear when I zoom out. This makes long distant track planning and decision making very difficult. Other nab apps I.e ozexplorer don’t have this problem.

For those having difficulty with tracks disappearing upon specific zoom outs, I've experienced this myself when uploading old gpx files that had tons of track files.

I tried to do a full zoom out of say New Zealand to show the entire trip itinerary, but I saw that track segments would disappear upon certain zoom levels (no rhyme or reason).

I think this has to do with a memory thing on the server side because I managed to overcome this particular use case by deleting the prior uploaded tracks and then re-upload a different gpx file with fewer tracks that still showed almost the same itinerary (but I took the time to delete tracks that didn't make much difference at the zoom out scale).

So if you find yourself with this issue, you may have to:

    1. Upload a subset of tracks so the server doesn't get overwhelmed with your track data

    2. Upload everything then turn off tracks that you don't have to sync and see at the moment

    3. If you're making tracks for planning, then you'll want to have longer tracks (or merge them in an app like BaseCamp before uploading to Gaia) instead of a bunch of smaller tracks.

Of course, it would be nice if Gaia users have the benefit of more server side memory allocated to them, but I recognize that requires more resources (which means higher subscription fees for the added resources).

Anyways, I hope this helps those still facing this issue.

I’ve been working on plotting a trip to Alaska thru Canada, mainly utilizing gaiagps.com. The routes are syncing with my iPhone and iPad with no problem except that when I zoom out to a certain level the routes disappear (although waypoint clusters remain). Interestingly, on gaiagps.com the routes remain displayed to a much, much higher degree. Would be nice if Gaia could resolve this after all these years.
