Closing loops in a sane manner

OK, so this happens all the time... is it just me? I make a loop and while trying to return home my last point will suddenly take some crazy circuitous connection path that adds 9 miles to the hike. It seems like if you add a point just beyond an intersecting trail that comes in from another direction it routes all the way back around that trail. Huh? Nothing can prevent it. I also use free mapping software and never have this problem... and I'm paying for this???

  I'm sorry you're having trouble creating a loop route.
  
  To finish a loop trail, you can place a route point just to the side of the trail then tap and drag it to where you need. Check out this article, under Out-and-Back Routes, for a screen video of how to do this:
