waypoint averaging?
Is there a way to waypoint average? This is a feature that I use for collecting points with better accuracy while using a stand along GPSr, such as a Garmin 60 csx. It is about the only feature that still keeps me using a stand along handheld GPSr these days!

Hey Jason, funny that I find you on this site! I'd like to send you some info that deals with this. I used to be a die hard proponent of waypoint averaging, but the research doesn't really prove much benefit, so I've been using GAIA for years and am a huge fan. I couldn't find your email on the UVLT website. Could you email me so i could send along the paper? Thanks!

I'll send you the data that we've been looking at. I haven't yet written up the white paper, but if you spend a few minutes with the spreadsheet you can get the gist from the pivot tables.

Did some searching for papers on Google Scholar, but came up empty. The more I think about it, Donn, the harder of a time I have in believing that waypoint averaging isn't better. You're basically just sampling from a multivariate normal distribution when averaging waypoints. More assessments of your location should produce a better average than any one sampling draw. So put me down as highly skeptical. ;)

I hear you, and the statistician in me agrees, but did you see the data I sent? It's pretty compelling. This is a legit testing protocol, and the hard data doesn't support our intuition. I'm not saying that I wouldn't use the feature if it were available in GAIA, but the evidence shows me that it shouldn't be a deal-breaker. Cheerio-

Alright..I'm in your camp. I definitely expected better performance than that...and those Garmin Map76 units that we have a closet full of....wow!...that's awful. I suspect my Motorola phone does better than that, as most of the phones in your comparison did. I agree with you. I would still use the averaging feature in Gaia, but it isn't a deal breaker.
