Saved Maps Borders

Let's say I have downloaded a map and want to maximize battery life on iOS phone. I turn on airplane mode, shut off all other apps, minimize screen brightness, show my downloaded map on main map and hit record. What happens when i walk out of map boundary? Does data turn on to continue to track me?
