Newbie Question: Does GPS require Cell phone coverage to save a location?

I know how to plan my hike and put in waypoints, save it to the Gaiagps.com and then download it into my phone before we hike.  

What if I find a place during the hike that I want to remember, but we have no cell phone coverage....can I still save that newly discovered waypoint?  If yes, then How do I do that?

  Yes, you can save waypoints and pictures without cell service.  Tap + > Create waypoint (my location) or take a picture > Save.  Yes, it is that easy...
