map download overlay box on my new iPhone XS Max iOS 12.0 not displayed

Just upgraded from very old iPhone.  iOS12.0. Loaded the Gaia app.  Logged into Gaia with the new phone.  All my old maps have been ported over.  Now trying to download a new map:  Layers icon, then "Download Maps"   -> map is displayed but the down load area overlay is not displayed over the map.  I can tell the down load area is present since there is an indication of the number of tiles to be download which changes if I zoom.  However, there is no shaded download area displayed.  I must have a setting wrong?  Or iOS 12.0?  Or?
