Import waypoint with non-default icon

I was excited to see that when exporting to geojson the waypoint icon is included.  That means I could at least import new waypoints with Gaia defined icons, right?  Well, not quite since geojson is not a valid import format. Bummer.  I have a list of campsites, but to my knowledge, I am not able to get them into Gaia with the tent icon, only the default icon.

    Thanks Ashli for the feedback on this issue. Being able to supply a "Gaia icon" name in the <sym> tag of the GPX file would definitely be a big help (as mentioned in the first part of your reply). I'm using QMapShack to build tracks and I don't mind doing a "replace/find all" before uploading the file to Gaia.

    To add to this, I'm wondering if it's possible to get compatibility with Garmin so that importing Garmin Waypoints will display with a similar icon in Gaia.

    The GPX 1.1 format has this <sym> tag for icons. Why can't we use this?

    Hey Folks, 

    Thanks for your comments. A few notes on this idea:

    1) Like greenword2002 mentioned, GPX supports the <sym> tag. While we don't currently support this tag, it would be possible for us to make this work for files that are imported into Gaia GPS with references to our existing icons. This isn't on our foreseeable roadmap but is the least resource intensive version of this idea and would likely be the first step in accomplishing other similar features.

    2) Importing your own custom icons would be a different project. We do have an official feature request for it here and I'd invite anyone interested in that idea to go vote/comment over there.

    3) Another version of this idea would be to support waypoint icons from other applications, like Garmin (also using the <sym> tag). This would probably be the most difficult to accomplish since we'd have to map their icons to ours and make guesses as to which of our icons most closely matches theirs. 

    If we make progress towards any of these things, I'll jump back over here and let you know.

    Being able to specify a sym tag to existing icons would be a huge step forward.

    This is heartbreaking.  I'm a user of another product, and this makes it hard to swallow transferring my existing waypoint data over and converting to using Gaia.  Any option you could give me, even if it takes me 6 hours of my own time, I'd do it.  Just please create an option.  For example, I'd go for the <sym> tag support option.
