Lets get this done, devs.  Apparently its not hard to do, it's an in-demand and basic feature, and you're loosing customers over it.

It’s hard to believe we’re 4 years into this issue and the best that’s happened is being able to use emojis for icons.. why doesn’t gaia have some bulk editing tools? Competitors products are starting to surpass gaia in other areas, I’m finding it harder and harder to reccomend Gaia as the best.

New user.  I love most of what I've seen in this app so far.  But...

Not knowing much abut GPX format to start with, I dug in and found it's a simple matter of string replacement for what's in the <sym> tag.  So, GAIA could run any import through a string replacement function, or better yet, allow the values allowed by other vendors.

For starters, the simple matter of replacing what is in the <sym> tag does not address original question. We want to import an icon called "myicon", and have it graphically defined to suit our needs. This has been available for decades in other products. I can call it "mygreenicon", but I still get some default icon.

Gaia is not what I thought it was years ago. Good sales pitch. From the direction it took, and for the almost complete lack of courteous response to threads such as these, I have been long left with the conclusion that the Gaia team never really wanted the image they sold. Their financial model and relationships with other organizations pretty much reflect the state of affairs everywhere. They have not been responsive to actual user input, instead rolling out "upgrades" that often, useful as they may be, leave the app in essentially the same state. I get the impression that a) the corporate staff are not interested in user input, and b) programmers have very little real world experience with both UI development and with how to use such apps in every day use. I no longer look forward to "upgrades", knowing that they will not address items that interest me. No staff member will reply to this message with a deadline for progress, because there is no intent to make progress here.
