Altitude readings in GaiaGps are suspicious and might be biased and noisy. Furthermore there are multiple standards for elevation (above ellipsoid, above geoid, above MSL ...).
The Android app Accurate Altimeter lists three different methods, one of which is DTED.
If the GaiaGps cloud had a DTED server then the altitudes could be looked up from the latitude/longitude and the altitude would be standardized and the ascent calculation wouldn't have to be smoothed. At least once the track has synched with the cloud.
