Clear instruction on turning a track into a route or importing (uploading) a route successfully without a third party app?

Currently, Gaia GPS doesn't have an option to convert routes into tracks, but I do see how that would be beneficial.

When importing data into Gaia GPS, the data will be classified as a route or track based on how the data is written in the file.

If you will let me know what program you are importing from, I can help you import your data as a route.

Unfortunately, Google Earth does not convert tracks and routes and you will need a 3rd party software like GPSBabel to convert your route to a track.

    Here's how:

    1. Save your route in Google Earth as a KML file
    2. In GPS Babel, change the Format to Google Earth (Keyhole) Markup Language for Input and GPX XML for the Output
    3. Under File Name for Input select your file and under Output select where you would like it saved
    4. Select Filter> Miscellaneous> Transform > Routes to Tracks
    5. Select Ok to transform your file

You will then be able to upload your file to gaiagps.com

I also want to edit my track, so I followed these instructions and used GPSBabel to convert my track to a route.  When I upload that route to my Gaiagps, it always called a 'folder', and doesn't show up in my 'route' list so I can select the edit function.

many of my routes and tracks are in the folder list.

    What am I missing?  thanks!

I found my converted route.  it's in the list of tracks.  Has the new name and everything, but it's in the track list rather than the route list.  and shows up in the folder list.

PS:  My track file came from Gaia, not GE like the op.  Maybe that's why it needs different treatment.

Robyn's method of converting a route to a track will almost work but the resulting file will not work with Google Earth because it will be missing timestamps. To correct this open the gpx file with GPS Track Editor and choose to automatically generate time stamps, and then save it.  It can then be properly opened by Google Earth.

Same question here. This thread is 4 years old, is there still no way to turn a track into a route?

Most of our group uses Google Earth to create routes. Thanks

    @MechEngr1
I'm sorry you are having an issue converting your track.

Can you click “Submit a Request” above and send a copy of your original track to support?
