Why do the "Stats" not match the values provided in the "Create Route" screen when using GAIAGPS.com?

    I'm sorry for the inconsistent stats when creating a route. We have an open bug report for this and ascent/descent stats displayed after saving a route are the more accurate values for your route.

    I am seeing an average error of 18.5% for the ascent and descent for 13 routes.  The highest errors are 67% and 63% error. If you would like, I can share my trip folder and I have a spread sheet for each routes ascent and descent for both the "stat" data and the "edit mode" data.  Are you aware the errors are sometimes of this magnitude?  It would be interesting for you to create the same routes and see if you have the same approximate errors.  With errors of this magnitude, what degree of error is there in the more accurate values?  I guess I'll have to compare similar routes using multiple software.  I hope GAIA has done this.  Is there a way to send you my spreadsheet and would you have time to share it with your QC people?

    I'm sorry you are getting inaccurate route data. We definitely want to look into these elevation errors more closely.

    Please share your routes and spreadsheet with support by clicking 'Submit a Request' above and attaching your information.

    I'll submit this when I get a chance.  Today, I calculated ascent and descent on both GAIA and Guthook.   I did this for the same exact routes on the John Muir Trail. It looks like Guthook ascent and descent are closer to the GAIA "edit mode" values than the GAIA "stat mode" values.  The GAIA ascent and descent values were most 5% to 15% higher than Guthook, but a few times, GAIA had ascent and descent values that were 60% higher.  Also, your final stats ascent and descent are even higher than the values obtained in the "edit mode".  Just from looking at the trail profiles, I can see that GAIA is overestimating.  There are just not enough ups and downs on an uphill mountain climb to account for the high values that GAIA calculates.  I recommend your QC people try it.  You can easily get a Guthook account for a major trail for $10 and compare some routes.  Their system is very easy to use, so you could have your own results in less than 30 minutes.  Guthook is not nearly as powerful as GAIA, so don't feel that it is competition.  On Guthook you can only create a route between points directly on a few major trails such as the AT, PCT, JMT, and Crest.   I hope your QC people will check this.   I'll see what I can send you, but it will not be until next week.

    Thanks for the update.

    When you are able to share your routes, can you also include your track from Guthook if you also recorded your hike?

    @Nathan Contrary to what you're writing, the stats after save are the most inaccurate. I compared it with a GPX track and all the possible values reported by Gaia were overestimated. See my post here: https://help.gaiagps.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/360014520714

    Thank you for the additional notes. We will continue to investigate and I've created a known issue about this here:

    I take it there is still no solution?

    I don't know about elevation loss and gain, but the total mileage is way off when viewed as a folder.  Here's a link to my folder, as you can see the total distance of the routes in the folder is far greater than the total listed in the folder Stats.

    Hoping to see a solution, thanks!

    @Orin

    I'm sorry for the trouble, the issue you are experiencing with your folder stats being off is a slightly different issue than the one being reported here.

    I created a separate bug report for the issue you are experiencing and we will continue to track this.
