An offline mode would be great! Gaia is using data even for areas I've already downloaded.

Agree completely. One way to do this if you want to do it right now is to use Datally (made by Google) to prevent the app from using mobile data. But yes, Gaia should have an offline mode. I would also hope such a mode would let the maps render quicker (seems like sometimes they are stall out looking for updates rather than referencing downloaded data).

For sure! This is also an issue when (like me) you're working in the mountains without cell service (i.e., forced offline mode). It would be great if the app determined that your location was w/in the boundaries of a saved map and then automatically (seamlessly) started showing that saved map on the main screen and stopped trying to update it via cell data (in your case--it uses too much data; in my case--there's no cell so I don't see a map).

YES! I need to know exactly what my offline experience will be before actually being out of service. Viewing a downloaded map still seems to use cache and the internet if available. Because of this and a few other lacking features, I still need to use a free GPS app.

You can verify your maps downloads before using Gaia GPS offline by following these steps:

Nathan - that verifies the data downloaded, but doesn't allow the end user to confirm visually in the app what their experience will be once they no longer have data (i.e. cell or wifi) coverage.  I currently mimic this by setting airplane mode on the phone and then purging the Gaia GPS cache, but that is a multi-step process.
