Gaia Stops Tracking
AnsweredI have been trying to trouble shoot this issue for about awhile now. When using the tracking feature, the app will locate my position and track fine at first, but after awhile the track stops and loses my location. In the end the app will freeze and I have to restart the app/device multiple times for it to locate me again. I have alsotried deleting and reinstalling the app. This has only started recently in the past few months, I normally put my device in airplane mode and the GPS used to work just fine.
I have now changed the locations services to only utilize gps and not the mobile data, hopefully that helps. any input would be great!

I am having a similar issue. As I'm tracking my route on the map the track line will disappear but the app will continue to track. If I flip to the trip tab and back to map the track line will fill itself in to the point where it stopped previously. It will track the entire route but it gets pretty annoying having to flip back and forth to see my route. Any thoughts?

Same issue, but it gets worse. I didn't find a more appropriate topic except maybe "crashes". I'm a new premium user (beginning of May, so the problem is not likely due to needing an update). Using in airplane mode on Android. Track stops - maybe at last location I verified position, but pointer still shows me where I am. Track will update on screen eventually. At some point after this behavior starts, topo map background starts blanking out between looking at screen and terrain around me; still showing track but on white background. I have to zoom out to re-gain topo detail on the edges, at which point it will automatically start filling in the white center and I can zoom back in. After going through this silliness for a while (an hour?), the Gaia app will stop completely (freezes and then crashes) and offers to send a report in. I have to restart the app, which starts a whole new track log - losing trip continuity. I sent the report in last time it happened (05/13/18). Same failure sequence the week before but not sure I sent the trouble report for that event.

I'm having a similar issue with iPhone 6 and IOS 11.3. But it's not limited to GaiaGPS. Google Maps has the same problem. I don't use Apple Maps so can't comment on that. Other online forums indicate that this is a general problem with iPhone 6 and IOS 11. After checking settings, etc, the best suggestion out there has been to revert to IOS 10. Unfortunately that's not possible with a signed version of the OS; Apple doesn't support downgrading.
For me personally this is very unfortunate. I've had to stop using both Google Maps (except as a static planner) and GaiaGPS. Upgrading to a new phone is not an acceptable alternative, given that Apple claims to still support the iPhone 6.
Has anyone seen a general solution, other than switching to some other brand, or maybe to some other mobile mapping device?

Using Gaia GPS on Android. This issue where GAIA randomly stops recording a track has been an issue for a while. Is there a general set of answers of why this occurs and what settings need to be reconfigured to stop this happening?
Its frustrating having to start recording a new track when it stops recording/freezing for no reason?
Can we get a general set of guidelines/answers here rather than 'saying email sent'....Thanks

I simply want to add another testimony to the propensity of the Android app to abort tracking prematurely. I've subscribed to this app since late May and have recorded nearly 20 tracks, and I'd estimate that half of them failed prematurely, that is, before I deliberately stopped the tracking feature. Please let us know when the problem is found!

Hi Robyn,
On Gaia GPS on Android I dont think its a phone memory issue..The same issue occurred on a previous phone I had. I recently replaced it with a new phone which has 18Gs of free memory and the same issue randomly occurs. So I dont think thats the issue. Unless its the way Gaia GPS tries to access the phone memory?

I too am having the issue where the program just stops recording the track. When I notice it, I have to start recording again, having multiple tracks for a single hiking trip. It generally seems to happen after I have stopped for a break/lunch. It has happened on my last 3 hikes (2 with my new phone) I do have the premium subscription and I just upgraded my ZTE Axon 7 (4gb ram) phone this year to the OnePlus 6 with 8gb of ram. It's unfortunate as I really like this app but can no longer trust it.

I too have experienced this on Android. (Moto X4 3 GB RAM, Storage: 32 GB w/ 64 GB SD)
I'm evaluating Gaia GPS as a replacement for the handheld unit I recently lost in the field. Tracking and navigation are the two most important features I need. Having the tracking be unreliable is forcing me to start looking elsewhere.
Also, better track management would be helpful, such as bulk export and archive of tracks from the track list.

Hi everyone, here's quick update on the status of this bug:
- The issue is related to the amount of free memory available
- v7.0.10 included an update to restart track recording if Gaia GPS was terminated by Android OS in attempts to free up memory.
We are also looking into ways to improve how tracks are recorded and this will be possible after the current project to update the mapping framework is finishes laying the groundwork.
