    Ron,

I think this is probably a bug - can you tell me what app version & device you have? You can find the app version number under Settings > Help.

    Also, let me know:

    1. Are you creating the route in the app, or on gaiagps.com?

    2. Are you exporting the route in the app, or from gaiagps.com?

The route was created with gaiagps.com and downloaded as a gpx file.  Then it was opened with garmin basecamp for mac version 4.6.3.

I just created a birdseye route with gaiagps that was created with 7 points (it is public) https://www.gaiagps.com/datasummary/route/a351eca7-f5a8-41c3-b756-5a1086f454d3/?layer=GaiaTopoRasterFeet

when I download this route as a gpx file it seems to have 601 points at 200 ft intervals.

    Ron,

    Thanks for the additional information.

I'm not terribly familiar with Garmin Base Camp, but I have used it before and tested out importing your file there.

When viewing the file in Base Bamp - the map image shows a clean route with no waypoints. If I double-click on the route, a new window pops up listing the route points - which are about every 200ft as you described. Does this sound like what you're seeing - and if so - is that unusual for Base Camp?

If you open up the file in a text editor, you can see that each point is correctly marked at <rtept> (route point) instead of <wpt> (waypoint) - so I think this might be working as expected, but let me know if I overlooked something!

    Ah.  Got it.

Yes that is what I am seeing too.

So I guess my question is this...

If I create a birdseye route in gaiagps.com that had, say, 5 routepoints that I 'click created' on the map to create the route, when I then download that route as a gpx file and open it in a text editor, instead of seeing only the 5 routepoints that I 'click created' I see hundereds for routepoints at 200 ft intervals.  It seems that gaiagps.com is 'filling in the space' of the route with these 200 ft routepoint.

I don't know it this is as designed behavior or a bug.  But if it is as designed, is there are way to control this?  That is, is there a setting to make the interval of automatically created routepoints to be, say 1/2 mi. instead of 200 ft.?

Or is there a way to not have these 'filled in 200 ft.' routepoints at all and only have the routepoints that I clicked in the map when I created the route?

The use case is that I need to create a route that is, say, 50 miles long for driving off-road and I can create such a route with only 50 or so clicked routepoints.  If gaiagps 'fills in' the route with additional routepoints that are at intervals of 200 ft each, that would be ~1,320 routepoints!!  That is way too may for my use.  If fact many garmin devices such as the garmin Oregon or the garmin etrex (which is what i have) has a limit of 250 points per route see https://support.garmin.com/faqSearch/en-US/faq/content/qazDMZN6w34xXWtvNhdMS6

So, at 200 ft per routepoint the longest route for a gaiagps.com created route that would load into a garmin oregon would be ~9.4 miles max.

    Ron,

There isn't a way to change this interval - and I am surprised at the Garmin limitation.

If you try to import this route to your Garmin, does it actually limit you? I wonder if their definition of 'points' differs from mine.

If it does limit you, I'd suggest converting your route to a track in base camp. You can right-click on the track name and select 'Create Track from Route'.

    Hi Ashli,

Thanks for the suggestions.  Here is what I have found out, hopefully this will be useful for other users.

    • all route types in gaiagps.com will create <rtept> that are ~200 ft apart from start of route to finish.
    • garmin handheld gps devices are limited to 250 rtept on a route.
    • if you load a downloaded gpx route from gaiagps.com that has > 250 rtept, the garmin device will only load the first 250 rtept and ignore the rest.
    • You can load a gpx route > 250 rtept into garmin basecamp, convert it to a track, and load the resulting track into a garmin handheld.  Garmin handhelds have a limit of 10,000 trkpt per track.
    • if you have a gpx track of > 250  trkpt (say 1000 trkpt), load it into garmin basecamp and convert it into a route, garmin basecamp will 'thin out' or 'prune' the points down to some number < 250.  For example, if I have a track with 1000 trkpt, convert it to a route, the resulting route will have ~50 rtept.  This is because garmin bascamp presumably 'knows' a garmin handheld has a 250 rtept limit.  Give it a try!
    • So, if you download a route, convert to a track and the back to a route in basecamp, the resulting full route will load into a garmin handheld.
    • If you create a route by hand in garmin basecamp, the resulting <rtept> will only be the ones you clicked...it will not 'autocreate' rtept.
    • For an interesting comparison with plotaroute.com - in plotaroute.com when you create a route, it also created additional rtept over and above the ones you clicked when you created the route, but instead of 200 ft intervals, they seem to be about 1000 yards apart.  When you download in plotaroute.com, you have the option to download as a track.  Then, you can load it into garmin basecamp and converted from a track to a route, eliminating a step of route -> track -> route like you would need to do with gaiagps.com

A nice enhancement to gaiagps would be to have a 5th route kind in addition to birdseye, car, cycle, hike - that being 'as clicked'.  This way a route could be created with exact rtept as user clicked!

    Thanks for help

I am having that exact same problem these dots appearing at intervals on a new track no matter where I imported from, it looks like it’s happening with this version of Gaia because it was not happening before, extremely frustrating as well as visually distracting, how do I get rid of it?

I'm sorry you are having an issue with your track.

Can you click “Submit a Request” about to contact the support team and include a copy of the track along with where the track was originally created?

By any chance was this route imported into Gaia GPS? Some 3rd party programs mark route points with waypoints and when imported into Gaia GPS, you will have a series of waypoints along the route.

It looks like Chris in Support contacted you with info on how to hide these waypoints. You can also delete them by:

    • Log into your account on gaiagps.com
    • Click the drop-down menu by your profile picture> Waypoints> Use the checkboxes to select multiple waypoints at once> Delete

Your waypoints associated with the route will be filed into one folder and you can see the folder name in the left-hand column.

If you have any questions, feel free to follow up via email and we can help you out.
