Difference between "show on main map" and "expand preview map" to locate myself on old saved track

Simple question:

Yesterday I am out hiking on a trail I had previously saved.  I decided to go off trail on my way back to save some time shortcutting a loop.

I called up the saved track.  Here's what I don't understand.

Tapping the small map brings up a choice:  

Expand Preview Map clearly shows the track, but does not allow me to located myself. The locate icon is missing.

Show on Main Map locates me but does not show the track.

All I needed was to see the saved track and my location at the same time so I could naigate myself back to the trail I saved as a track.

What am I doing wrong? Also, on Main Map, I am seeing a camera icon in a blue circle sometimes. What does that represent? Tapping it does nothing.
