Open Request to Gaia GPS team - Safety Issue
First you have an awesome app that you clearly invested a LOT of time, effort and thought into. And it only gets better.
But that said, I would hope that the Gaia team realizes that there is app is a critical safety app. People depend on their app to be working. They depend on knowing and being able to sue the interface. This isn't like Spotify or YouTube. If Spotify or YouTube does an unexpected update or does something that breaks the interface or provides a new unfamiliar interface, the worst case is we are not able to use their apps to entertain ourselves.
With the Gaia GPS app, the worst case is that we die or get lost!
So I would respectfully request that Gaia put in place procedures that avoids unexpected "updates" to the app. Especially updates that change/improve the interface.
Imagine you are flying to Europe on a Boeing 777. Your pilot has hundreds of hours in the plane and is very familiar with the interface. But right after he takes off, he tries to use some critically important navigation features and gets a notice, "Hey, we've redone everything! Entirely new and improved interface! Now nothing is where you remember it! You'll have to completely relearn the system! But enjoy your flight!" How happy would you be if this is how the airplane interfaces were updated? I think we'd agree that doing this is a bad idea.
So I would request that some procedures be put in place that lets us install updates on our own time after notice, so we can make sure we can take the time to learn them prior to needing to depend on them. And if there is already a way to do this, please let me know, and I apologize in advance!
But it has happened to me more than once now that an update has come at the worst possible time. I know that is not your intention. And hopefully we can avoid this going forward.
