what do the trail numbers mean?

Howdy. What is the significance of the numbering on trails? Is this merely to correspond to physical signs on the trails to help a hiker find their way, or do the numbers correspond to additional information you can get about the trail somewhere? See screenshot of trails numbered 569, 579, etc.

  I had the same question. A helpful USFS employee told me these are national forest trail numbers. At the link below you can carefully click the Anderson trail and see that 579 is clearly the “trail number”
