Elevation error is back and ask for Location Based elevation option

    Hi @scomeau,

This issue with recorded elevation is device-specific. Each GPS chipset will report location information somewhat differently. The app is set up to report elevation from sea level; however, there are still some cases where this doesn't work properly.

If you are curious, what is happening is that the app needs to account for Vertical Geoid Offset, converting from the elevation above an Ellipsoid to elevation from sea level.

Unfortunately, fixing this case for one device would likely break it for others. We will look into a more viable long term solution in the future, but as the issue is quite complex, this probably will not be fixed in a short amount of time. I will reach out to you if I have any questions to help understand the issue more thoroughly.

In the meantime, if you have a particular track that you would like to fix the elevation on, you can adjust it on the website. Here is how to do that:

    Hi Jay,

I tested this out, and found that appending &elevationlookup to the URL for the track does reprocess the track, and permanently alters the elevation values for the track. Not only does it adjust for the Ellipsoid to Geoid elevation conversion, it also seems to smooth (perhaps as a rolling average) the values so that there is no longer large unexplained noise in the elevation values. So on track that records a paddle on a lake, the elevation mostly stays the same value, which is expected.  On a mountain hike, the elevation changes are also much smoother and not longer erratic.

Thanks! This a decent "workaround". Hopefully this can be resolved this year, so that the elevation value works correctly on the phone in real-time. An alternative is to have an app settings option to use the Topo map location as the elevation value, which may work very well, assuming the app can interpolate the elevation from the phone location and map data.
