    Hello Steve:

Yes, you can use GAIA on an iPad to track a trip and save the track.  Once saved, you can export the track to a kml file from the web version of GAIA.  I don't recall if you can export to the kml while still on the iPad or not (I don't have my iPad with me at the moment so I can't check).

The iPad works best for tracking if it has an internal GPS (all current cellular capable iPads have internal GPS units, all current WiFi only iPads lack internal GPS).  If you have a WiFi only iPad you'll need a separate GPS unit that can feed the location data to the iPad (usually via Bluetooth).  It may be possible to share the location data from an iPhone with a GPS to the iPad.  Sometimes you can get rough location data via cell towers, etc, but the precision is often poor.  I feel it's best to use units with their own GPS.
