map downloads stuck
I'm reinstalling the app in hopes that the cache will disappear... but many of my saved maps are stuck downloading. If I say 'resume' they seem to restart from zero and usually get stuck again. I'm on wifi with good internet speed.
I see posts about this from 2-5 years ago promising a fix, but nothing more recent...
please update the status of this problem and offer a solution.

Same issue. Maps saved on one device do not sync to another device properly...they appear but are "Zero KB" and the download just stays on "Download Progress: 0%" forever. I literally cleared everything saved in my Gaia account via website, deleted the app on both phones, and started from scratch. Same issue with nothing saved except 1 map. Worked with Gaia support with no luck, they just had me archive the map and unarchive it, but that doesn't change anything. They take 2+ weeks to respond to support requests, so it's impossible to troubleshoot. Might be time to move on to another app.

I've noticed the same thing using the APP on various Androids running Android OS v10, v11 and v12. I'm also running my home WiFi to do this. It seems if I force the APP to quit and then restart it I can get the downloads to resume, but trying to resume the downloads within the APP itself doesn't seem to work. The problem seems to be more of an issue running on Android v10 and v11 on devices that only support 2.4G WiFi. The device I have running v12 supports both 2.4G and 5G Wifi and usually downloads on the 5G side. When it does so it seems to be a LOT more reliable.

Adding another observation that may relate to the download problem on Android. (It seemed to help my downloads.) Since Android OS v10 there's been a feature added called Duraspeed. It basically throttles the WiFI connection after a bit to conserve battery and such. Even if it's disabled it still seems to be active. It appears there's an option in the Developer settings to really disable it though where it's called “Wi-Fi scan throttling”. Go to Settings->About (right after the Settings->system). Open it and scroll down to the Build entry. Tap it 7 times to enable Developer Mode. Go back to Settings->System and note there's now a "{} Developer" option listed. Click on it and scroll down to "Wi-Fi scan throttling". Notice it's enabled, so just disable it.

I'm slowly becoming convinced that the slow and stalled download problem isn't with the device APP or the user's WiFi or Internet connection at all - it's appearing to me to be more of a Server issue at Gaia GPS's end. They just don't seem to have enough Server capacity or bandwidth to supply the map downloads to their user community. If that's the case then shame on them - they're renting use of their maps thru their subscription service so they should be laser focused on making sure their subscribers have excellent access to the maps on their supported devices.

I think the problem is that Gaia either doesn't care or doesn't know how to fix the issue. Their support is fairly decent in coming up with things to try, but their response time is 2-3 weeks each time, so going back and forth troubleshooting the issue doesn't work. There's obviously a major problem with the map downloads (especially between devices if you save on one device and expect it to download on the other). I gave up and got a refund from Gaia.

I tend to agree, Gaia GPS's main area of expertise seems to be in mapping and renting the use of them to subscribers. The APPs, web page and Servers for map downloads seem to be secondary and that really shows in their support. although these are the very things that make renting and using their maps possible! Recently though they did update the Android APP to solve the external storage issue and they've admitted that they're swamped with a large number of customer reported problems. After spending a couple of weeks trying to figure things out and identifying work-arounds for the issues I found, I wrote up a fairly long technical review with suggestions for possible changes that I sent to their Support people. They responded by giving me a free subscription for the year, so I remain hopeful that they'll get the staff they need, solve the issues causing customer complaints and get their Service working in a more acceptable and timely manner.

I have the same problem -- the App on my iphone is trying to download a bunch of maps and appears to be making zero progress. Meanwhile I created a route on my laptop twice this morning -- the first time it didn't save when I hit save. The second time it saved and was there for maybe 15 minutes and then disappeared -- it is not in the archive or in the trash on my laptop -- very frustrating

I've been trying to download maps for 2 days for an upcoming trip, Tried limiting it to one layer only, smaller size, lots of things. It always gets stuck before completion. I may have to get a subscription to all trails before I go so I have maps. This is ridiculous for a paid - premium paid - service! I'm on wifi with good service, done everything they suggest and more.

I had issues saving routes and then I noticed that Gaia was trying to download discontinued maps in the background. I guess this had been happening in the background since I switched to a new phone - once I deleted all the old saved maps in my folder the app became stable again and I could download and save new routes and maps. There is a maps download button in settings - you should be able to see if it is hung up trying to download a map that is the older version and not in their database anymore. Ideally they should have a warning to let you know this is happening but instead it just jams up the system in the background.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried deleting all the maps I had downloaded and it did not make any difference, The first time i tried it got to 99% and stopped, pretty good but what's in that 1%?? Tried twice more and it did not do anything at all. 0%. I deleted the cache, anything else I could find to delete. And if this is the solution it's pretty frustrating as you want to have your local maps ready to go and it would be a pain to load them each time. Especially when they don't download. Not sure if there is some compatibility issue, but incredibly frustrated. Again, appreciate your insight. Thanks again. Wish Gaia was as responsive!!

OK, so I uninstalled the app and reinstalled on my iPhone and it is working now so something must have been corrupt. If you are having trouble downloading on iOS try this. I archived my tracks, waypoints and photos on the webapp first to protect that data.

Here I am joining the chorus of folks super frustrated by this core functionality that simply appears broken. Offline maps is the entire point — and frankly being able to successfully manage and restart downloads when connectivity is spotty should be part of that. Regardless, I’m at a home wifi w/ a solid connection and here I am reading threads and fighting with the app instead of out hiking. How is this worth my subscription?
My friends are urging me to stop cheaping out and to simply switch to an alternative that WORKS even if it costs a bit more. I guess my next move is to start downloading all my saved waypoints in prep for that switch. Too bad GaiaGPS hasn’t responded to years of customer complaints.2 -
Adding my voice to this problem. I have encountered it multiple times and right now i have been struggling to download some maps for a trip that i am leaving for next week. It will get to what looks like 100% on the progress bar, get stuck and i eventually kill and restart everything. In the past it eventually works, but this last round of downloads I have not yet been able to get it all complete. I have sent a support request to Gaia with no meaningful response yet.

I had a similar problem a year ago. Turned out it was being caused by the app trying to sync some map areas that I had saved at some point but that were now in an incompatible format because the maps they were taken from were no longer supported. This made the system unstable -- I would create a route and when I tried to save it the route would disappear -- very frustrating. After I deleted all the old saved map areas the problem disappeared. I believe my issues showed up when I switched to a new laptop - and Gaia was not able to sync the old unsupported map areas - I found this on a Gaia help file:
3) Verify that you are not using a map source that is no longer supported
Some map sources are no longer supported by Gaia GPS. This could be because the map provider no longer allows third-party apps to download their map tiles, like Google Maps, or because we’ve swapped over to our in-house sources instead, such as MapBox Streets and MapBox Outdoors.

Thanks for the tip. My current problem is with downloading Gaia sourced maps (Gaia Overland). Gaia support has responded and requested screenshots but no resolution yet.

I was ultimately able to fix this by deleting Gaia from my iPad completely. The first time, it did not work. I then deleted it again and reloaded everything. The second time that worked. Right after I got it working, I got this response from Gaia support. I did not have a chance to try it though.
Can you let me know the results of the following steps?
- Remove the Gaia Overland map source from the Layers menu. Layers menu > Add map layers (at bottom) > **Category___** > **Map Source___** > X Remove. This will delete this layer from any Saved maps, but you can download the maps again later.
- Force close Gaia GPS
- Wait 30 seconds
- Open Gaia GPS and re-add the map source. Layers menu > Add map layers (at bottom) > **Category___** > **Map Source___** > Add.
- Any maps with this layer on your account will have been archived. Follow these steps to unarchive them: Archiving, Unarchiving, and Recovering Lost Data

This has been an onging problem since the start....been using Gaia for 6 or 7 years. Tonight I cannot get anything to download. OnX is looking pretty good these day.

Yeah, I've cancelled my subscription and deleted the APP. On a recent trip I found TrakMaps and downloaded it. Annual cost is $9.99 and I was able to download all the trails for an entire State over WiFi in a few minutes. And it was pretty damn accurate for having all the trails I was interested in and trying to travel in my UTV. It may not have all the bells and whistles that GaiaGPS claims to have, but at least it works when you need it.
