Switched to Apple Version, seems like a downgrade!

Up until recently I have loved Gaia GPS in the ute and with maps downloaded on Android.  Can start and record tracks from the car display, the maps are clear and mirror exactly what is on the phone.  I switched to an Apple iPhone 11 and the app appears next to useless for me.  The map seems to barely represent the phone app version and there are almost no options.  I have tried changing map layers, but it ends up in dark mode, or just not with the detail.

Am I missing something fundamental here?!
